Why do freezer last a lot less than refrigerators?

I’ve been in my house for 10 years now and have the same refrigerator. I’m about to buy my third freezer, last one died last week.
What’s with freezers having such a short life span?

Could it have to do with keeping your items below the temperature of freezing?

I'm still using a Kenmore fridge I bought in '86. I'm on my third freezer during the same time frame.

Clearly the solution is to buy loads of refrigerators until the freezer capacity equals what you need and stock all the added refrigerator portions with beer,

People tend to spend a boatload more on their fridge than they do on their freezer. Then they often have their freezer in a garage or other place where there is more humidity.

I have my parents 1981 freezer upright. No moving parts aside from the compressor.
Needs hair dryer treatment once in a while but that's it.
Newer ones are (naturally) made cheaply and have a lot more complexity.

My paw paw and my dad's houses have the only fridges I can remember (I'm 41). Our fridge is 5 years old and has all kinds of shite broken on it. I'm ready to throw it out to the curb.

They could have replaced them multiple times with the cost of the electricity newer ones would have saved. Most consumer refrigeration products fall are like this.

We have a Sub Zero fridge and freezer pair that have been running with no issues for 26 years and were bought at the time standard fridges had become 10 year appliances so there is that option but while I haven't priced them in more than a decade it certainly is not the most cost-efficient option but if you would rather pay more money than buy new ones it may be worth a thought. When we priced Sub Zs 11 years ago for the LA "camp" we simply went with a Samsung that is still running fine but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

My mom is still using the Kenmore deep freeze she got as a wedding gift 49 years ago.
And I still have my grandparent’s one from the 80’s.
