Email all dealerships you are willing drive to for out the door price of car you are interested in. Then buy from whoever offers the lowest price.

Yea it's annoying as hell when you're dealing with someone who knows less about the product than you.

And it's completely inexcusable beyond like your first week on the job.

It's truly not that difficult to sit down for a couple of hours and learn the features of each model. Hell 90% of the features are identical model to model.

But then again, I assume most car salesman are not very bright, as most of them would be something other than a car salesman if they were.

This, and don’t fall for the usual question of “how much do you need your car payment to be?”. You want to know the out-the-door price up front. It should be your first question before talking about anything else.

Knew a guy once that went to 3 separate dealerships and asked them for their absolute lowest cash price.

Ended up buying the lowest priced one. The other 2 called and asked why he didn’t come back to them after getting prices he said I told you I wanted your absolute best price.

They said we might could have done better. He said then in other words you lied when I asked for your best price and y’all told me $$$$$

The “Car Edge” videos on YouTube have some good tips before you step in a dealership. May save you some money and headaches.

Since nobody is paying under MSRP, with few exceptions, for the last four years, avoid all this shite and order one from Ford/Toyota/Chevrolet.com. No salesman ever gets involved, except to send you pictures of when your car is coming off the line, and when to pick it up. Even if you don't want to wait for a build (patience saves you money,) you still get prices on stuff on the lot in black and white.

But y'all keep doing you. "Deals" from your local dealership for decades.

I only talked about the terrible practices of the mostly LA bmw dealers in this thread, but we had even worse problems with Chevy dealers across Texas and LA. More than once we had deposits down on a Tahoe my husband needed for work and the vehicle either “never came in”, “has no expected date of arrival”, or “sorry my manager sold it”. The manager sold it schtick happened after they called and said come and pick it up and the 1 hour drive to dealer. Left terrible reviews but not much else we could do since they simply refund your deposit. It was Demontrond down south of Houston. This was at the time some dealers were adding 10k onto the msrp. I don’t know how many times I told some manager all they were doing was ending their own damned business with these shitty practices.

Simple process.

Go to a dealer and tell them what you’re looking for. Find a vehicle you want and tell them to put it on paper for the bank. Print out vehicle specs and price. Thank them and tell them you’re going to the bank to secure financing.

Take the paper and go to other dealerships and tell them to beat it. Simple.

I did this when I bought my truck and got more options and a better price than the first one.

It probably helped that my delivery dealer for 3+ vehicles lived 150 yards away, he wasn't escaping any negative feedback. He actually cut me a check same day, when some delivery idiot added BS I didn't order to the tab upon delivery.

I think LA dealers are worse than most because of the same mentality that keeps MBAs working at Chili's in Lafayette, because they "can't" move out of state. Blind, bullshite family loyalty. Louisianans will eat it and say shite like, "that's where daddy bought all his cars," whereas people in a place from Houston (nobody is from here, it seems) have very little tolerance for that BS.

I was so shocked when after shopping 5-6 dealers across LA and TX that when I got to a good one I threatened to beat him up if he was messing around. He laughed and assured me no funny business so my husband and I got on a plane an hour later and flew to pick my car up. Then when the skeezeballs I had been dealing with checked in with their "too good to pass up" crap I sent them pics of my purchase.

You saved enough to afford to fly to pick it up?

Are you going to have it serviced at the dealer you bought it from? Or just take it to the nearest dealer, expecting great service from the dealer you shunned?

there is a guy out in the Midwest that sells the same warranty your dealer wants $3500 for $850. He is 100% legit too. Got my Toyota warranty book a few weeks ago. Jerry is his name and he works at a Toyota dealer.

That narrows it down good for us… Jerry, Toyota dealer, Midwest but totally legit. Got it

don't be silly. service dept. money is more important to a dealer than new car money. service wants to keep you coming back and they want good surveys. I generally drive more enthusiast vehicles that aren't always easy to find. If ever questioned by someone I say " well you know how it is with these XXXX, you have to go where they are." This was especially true during covid.

We were going to just drive and the dealership was going to wait on us, but United had reasonable fares to IAH. I used miles for 2 tickets and paid 250 ish for 1 ticket. I saved plenty to cover that.

I did just return to dealer for service last week. Had to be in Houston and drove it to Woodlands. So again, yes.

I bet you get told to go to hell quite often.

And they rightfully should. He's setting the prices with the assumption of getting his behind the scenes profit. Therefore, the prices appear to be lower upfront than they actually are.

This is what I do, except I do entertain their phone calls. I find it helps a bit by proving that I am legitimately in the market and not just kicking tires. Car salesmen often, very unjustifiably, feel like their time is more valuable than their customers' time. It helps to pump their ego up a little bit.

There's some good hard working ones out there who will do some legwork to earn your business. Always finance the car, longest term they'll give you with no early payoff penalty, and then pay it off as you want to. Pay it off the next day if you want to.

Anyone who’s having a voice conversation with a salesperson is doing it wrong. It’s email. It’s gonna be all over email. You’re gonna send me the final price with taxes and all your bullshite fees. We’re not playing this game. I’m in and out of the building in under 10 minutes or I’m leaving. I’ll not do business here.

Best thing about e-mail is the paper trail.
