Them: Send us a written quote. Me: I don't have a written quote, it’s published here. Them: We need a written quote for that price.

If you had a written quote for X amount why would you be going to these dipshits for the vehicle?

The first one who makes the offer usually gets the short end of the stick.

Basically, if they want to play games, tell them you are going to walk if they keep this up.

But its a well used tactic to frustrate folks to make them want to throw up their hands, give up and pay what ever price to get a vehicle.

The poster 'Will Cover' has a good strategy for purchasing a vehicle. Can use the same blueprint for purchasing a home or any large/major item.

Find the same exact make model trim of the car you want from one of those massive dealerships in TX or FL, email their internet manager the car you want and ask them to email you their best price. Those dealerships are able to advertise and offer bigger discounts since they do so much volume.

Once you get that, take it to the local dealership and tell them to beat it if they want the business. They will beat it.

Do the same thing with the finance company. Find the best possible rate you can online from a credit union, bring it with you, and tell the finance manager if he wants your business he has to beat it. They will beat it.

Short story. We owned Toyotas for over 30 years. Was time to trade our Highlander. Went to Toyota dealer to see what they had. The circus began. They dragged us all over the lot; our sales rep was supposedly new and after several hours could not give us a straghtforward price. She passed us over to the credit/sales manager who was a prick, and still wouldn’t give us a price, and then began to nickel and dime us over the trade in price and discount offer. He finally offered us $500 trade on our Highlander. I stood up and said don’t insult my intelligence and we walked out. Was 2017. Next morning we got radical and went to Mazda dealer. Were treated with respect, and we drove out in a brand new Mazda, which I am still driving 7 yrs. later. Zoom-zoom! Love it!

You should know what the fair market value approximately is. Just make an offer a little lower than where you think it should end up. They will counter, then you give your “best and final” offer and be willing to walk.

For the people that scoff at things like CarMax and Carvana - the dealer experience is the reason those places were created.

I respect folks that enjoy the process of haggling and negotiation - but a lot of people just want to see a price and pay that price. They pay more - every time - but they seem happier to have avoided the charade.

I’ve not had a ton of bad dealership experiences - but I get why people want to avoid them.

I had a similar experience recently with Vaughan Chevrolet in Natchitoches.
Completed the entire deal by email and phone calls then they delivered the truck to me in Baton Rouge.
Easiest vehicle purchase I’ve ever made.

I have driven Hondas my whole adult life but switched to Hyundai recently. The Honda place was doing something similar and also doing the “market adjustment” markup. The Hyundai place in Gonzales was pretty straightforward. TBH i think Hyundai is what Honda used to be in terms of quality for the money.

This is why car dealership owners lobbied Louisiana senators to not allow manufacturers to sell directly to customers. Buying a Tesla is a breeze. You literally do it on the phone through their app. No price haggling, no one trying to get you to add this or that or look at this other car over here. And no, please don’t make this about EVs. That is NOT the point at all. I am only talking about the buying process.

Bought a new vehicle last month, sticker was $50k got out of there in an hour for $50k tax, title, license, and all the bs warranties they insisted I had to have. I feel like thats about the best you can do on any popular vehicle these days. Also, was able to get the interest rate down an additional 1.5 because of my credit.

MY car is 12 years old and has almost 170,000 miles now. I'll be in the market for another one soon and I am dreading the day I'll have to deal with these idiots.

Last 2 new vehicles I've bought (2006 & 2017) were easy pezzy. I figure out what I want, call dealers within 4 hrs drive, get best price, and make deal over the phone. A dealer like you mentioned, I would have hung up on. I've found the best deals in Tx and saved several thousand $ vs buying anywhere in La. Don't let salesmen waste valuable time with their bird brained BS. Move on.

Because that model makes them money

If everyone would quit playing along, they would be forced to evolve

But too many people care only about the monthly.

Depends on the price and the deal. Paying $22K vs $20K is a lot different than posting $52K vs $50K IMO.

Sounds like you dealt with an idiot. Any person whose job it is to make deals that can't make an offer needs to be fired.

If they really told you that, it’s within their price range.

My last truck I showed them the price that I had quoted and they told me that it was a good deal and they couldn’t beat it. If they would have tried to negotiate from there then I wouldn’t have known I still had some room.

I hate it. I would rather colonoscopy prep than deal with car dealers. Mostly the reason why we buy from private sellers. Had to buy my daughter a car a few weeks ago at a dealership. Worked out but had to go through similar bs to finally agree on price.
