Our main vehicle is a minivan but it's for practical reasons. After 3 back surgeries our T&C is the perfect height. Yes there's SUV options for the height but they having shitty back legroom for the 2nd row. Unless we're hauling the in-laws with us the right middle row gets "stowed" so my still growing 6'3" 12 year old can stretch his legs out. After hitting a wheelchair it was in the shop for a week and the crossover rental was horrible...only a toddler could fit comfortably in the back of that sumbitch.

Ive heard this all my life, but i’ve Never heard anyone explain why, specifically, this is the case.

I dont have children, so i’m Open to someone enlightening me- but as far as i can tell, the only difference in terms of ease of use would be the fact that you dont have to ‘climb’ into a minivan like you do with some SUVs since minivans are closer to the ground... But that’s it.. how are they more ‘economical’ (are the mpgs’s slightly better?).. And more ‘practical’ or ‘functional’?? All i know is that if it starts raining hard and the streets start flooding all of a sudden like they often do, my Jeep has better ground clearance and is much less likely to get flooded than a minivan.. to me, that’s practicality.

I’ve owned Jeeps and minivans and their is no comparison in comfort. A Dodge Caravan is as comfortable as you can get without a massive bench seat. It’s also great if you’re taller than 6’2.

There is a ton of room even before you pull the seats out. It drives like a car so women and teens can jump in and drive.

Plus they are extremely cheap.

I only used Jeep as the comparison because that’s what i happen to drive.. You can substitute pretty much any true SUV and my questions still stand.

Kids 10 & 7.....haven’t had the need for a minivan yet

I wouldn't own a mini van, but the new Honda/Kia/Toyota's are nice

I've never owned a mini van but I've rented them when we've traveled with our 3 kids so we can have others ride with us. It's amazing how much better they are for loading and getting them around.

My buddy drove a minivan for awhile after high school. We did so much weed and coke in it. An extremely inconspicuous vehicle.

SUVs and minivans are more different than the this thread makes them sound.

Of course they are. But you have know-it-alls in here who have never driven a true minivan and just assume that they're SUVs.

We had a Dodge Grand Caravan. It was very comfortable and more roomy that the SUV we have now. The new Chrysler minivans are sharp looking too.

Why did America move away from the station wagon? CAFE standards. Fuel efficiency requirements by the government for a company’s whole fleet of cars convinced companies to discontinue station wagons, which are calculated as a car, and instead use minivans and SUVs which are calculated as trucks.

Yep, especially when you look at older American station wagon behemoths. However, I think the Europeans have made some great station wagons over the last 10 years, almost bought a Saab Sport Combi wagon last year...

I don’t know, my wife refuses to drive one so instead we have a SUV and it’s a pain to get everyone in and out of it with car seats in the way. A minivan would be a lot easier.

Status. American equate SUV's as higher status vehicles than minivans. Minivans are way more practical. They largely get better gas mileage, the sliding doors are easier to navigate than standard SUV doors, other than Suburban type SUVs they have more cargo room, and they almost all drive better than SUVs. Oh, and insurance is usually a little cheaper on them.

But Americans have convinced themselves they're not cool.

And I'm just as guilty because we don't have a minivan and drive 2 SUV's.
