Judging by your post history, I don’t think you’re as far away from being a broke poor as you think you are

Get a better job. Most plant jobs pay good.

While getting out of extreme poverty is possible in many cases. It’s much harder than people who didn’t grow up extremely impoverished give it credit for. For one thing, having some type of money or generational wealth gives one the opportunity to make so many more mistakes and still be “successful.” It’s like yes, if one born into poverty manages everything perfectly their entire life, they will most likely get out of it, but how many of us are perfect? And there are so many more traps to fall into along the way if one starts from a place of extreme poverty.

It's only going to get more difficult, too. As others mentioned, driven individuals can get out, and do. But what's available to build community around in lower/lower-middle class areas? It's much harder to start a business in this age with simple hard work and grit. That doesn't mean it's not worth doing, but you're battling ecommerce and AI and all sorts of things that put options almost out of reach.

I won't pretend that my self-discipline would see me through in such a scenario. I might do well at a shitty school, get a diversity or merit scholarship and go become a doctor or lawyer, yes. But most kids from middle class environments don't have the chops to do that, so to the extent poverty is a problem to solve (not arguing it is, honestly), we need more solutions than just bootstraps.

Why can't fat people get their shite together? Habits. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Good habits are the key to all success. Habits are hard to break.

If it’s unlocked do you really need a key to open it?

It's hard to break the cycle. They don't usually have the means to save to get our of being poor so they can't/don't think of the future, only immediate needs.

The definition of being poor is lacking the ability to manage money.

it's much deeper than that

it's about decisions in many areas in life

for example, having 4 children out of wedlock before age 21

Reality?

In the same way that most (not all) homeless are drug addicts and mental cases...

... Most (not all) poors are poor because they are dumb and make bad decisions.

Also there is a much stronger sense of “community” in poorer communities. Meaning, a lot of people expect someone from their community to help them get out of poverty if one person makes it. Rather than acting as a rising tide lifting all ships, it’s a crabs in a bucket situation.

It's not that poor people can't get their shite together, it's people who can't get their shite together that end up poor because of bad decisions.

I’m fairly poor. Only make 30k a year. Don’t get government assistance of any kind. I don’t keep a budget or penny pinch. I just don’t spend money frivolously. I’ve managed to buy a decent house and a decent car and live comfortably. It’s really not that hard.
