Why aren’t battles from recent wars in our consciousness like past wars?

Many people can rattle off battles from WW2 or the War Between the States for example, but hardly anyone talks about our recent battles in the desert.
Different type of warfare? Public doesn’t care as much?

We don’t really have any sustained battles anymore.. There are some good Docs on ambush battles of Afghanistan outposts and patrols.. There some good stuff out on Fallujah as well

The United States hasn't fought a war on the scale of WW2 since then. An entire generation was committed to the war effort. The more recent wars have been fought by an increasingly small group of professional military

Simple. WWII and the Civil War were much more interesting than any of the other wars. You have evil, good, heroes, villains, the western civilizations and world powers going at it with each other, genocide, and military-industry complex. Nothing recent compares.

Blackhawk Down made the incursion into Somalia a household thing, but still it had relatively few casualties compared to wars fought with epic battles

Fallujah was a pretty damn big battle that Marines definitely remember.
But we haven’t really had a true foe that could really threaten our military since WWII/Chinese at the Chosin Reservoir.
