Why are we still using the phillips head screw for anything in 2018?

Torx screws do everything better and are now available. The design of the phillips screw inherently causes the screwdriver to cam out of the slots if you try to tighten and damages the screw making the situation even worse.

Is this big screwdriver industry just trying to sell more tools?

Let’s solve the residual flat-head screw problem from the 30s first. How is this still a thing?

Torx is superior. I always replace phillips with torx every chance I can.

There's no money in it for Big Torque to start rocking the boat.

Probably tradition and aesthetics for the flats. They have their niche (furniture, guns, etc)

Phillips have no tradition, shitty aesthetics, and perform poorly.

Flats definitely have better aesthetics. I get that one.

6 torx execs have “committed suicide” in the last year.

No one has ever met Phillip, but he’s connected.

Amen.

My dad looks at me crazy when I help him put shite together and I replace every Philip's with a torx.

Well, let’s see. First, if you make even a feeble attempt to use the correct Phillips screwdriver (3 sizes cover about 95% of the screws you’ll encounter) and you know how to properly use a screwdriver, the problems you cite pretty much do not exist.

Second, torx screws are nowhere near as available as Phillips, and probably never will be, much like Allen head screws.

Third, torx, like Allen head screws are sized. Unless you have that size torx bit or screwdriver, you are done until you have it. So instead of being able to do almost any job with 2 or 3 screwdrivers, you must have 6 or 8 bits or screwdrivers at all times without fail, or you are at a standstill.

Market forces indicate whether a tool is an actual improvement or not. If torx was better, it would be dominant by now. It isn’t, and probably never will be.

What’s wrong with Philip heads? My Jeep is covered in torx heads and I can’t stand it.

Problem with torx is that you need about 10 different size tools to handle the spectrum of fasteners, whereas with Phillips you only need a #1 or the trusty #2.

If those screws were phillips and you have any corrosion in the threads your screwdriver will probably cam / twist out when you try to remove the screw, damaging the slots, and causing the problem to be even worse when you try again to remove the screw. Just an example

Maybe you should go to Lowe's classes and learn how to use a screwdriver.

FWIW, companies like Wera make screwdriver heads that are meant to grip better when extracting
