Because cars are expensive. They don’t really manufacture bare bones cars anymore. Pretty much anything after 2013 will have a lot of bell and whistles that used to not be standard. I just bought a car that was a 2017, with a clean car fax and one previous owner with 15,000 miles for a little under $18,000. That was a fricking home run as far as I can tell.

I think a big part of it is that vehicles last a lot longer than they used to, I remember when they were basically done after 100k miles.

Yeah, I guess I'm still in that mind set of looking for something under 100k. Probably just carry over from my parents generation.
Looking at Civics, Corollas, Accent, etc in that style. Small car, 4 cylinder, doesn't need to have a ton of features. Any other brands I should check out? Not sure about vehicles like Fiat as I don't have any experience with that brand.

New cars keep going up in price at ridiculous levels yearly and cash for clunkers fricked up the used car market

same reason trucks cost $60k today, idiots keep buying them no matter how insanely overpriced they are.
trucks used to cost $30k
truck building costs didnt go up but prices went to $35k and they sold like hot cakes

they are never going to stop raising prices until idiots quit buying them no matter what the price is, you just get a 7 year note on them now
used prices follow new sales prices and thats why a 5 yr old truck with 150k miles is selling for 3/4 of full brand new prices

There’s a dealership in our area offering two new cars for $299/mo., Hyundai, Kia, something like that. Two cars for $299. Maybe worth a drive, but I’m sure it’s being offered elsewhere.

Seeing the same issue with our fleet. New delivery vehicle costs 22k, a 3 year old used one with 50k miles, sells for 17k.
I don't get it, 5k difference for a vehicle that's basically 50% done, should be 11k. I don't get the rationale. The warranty that comes with the new car will offset 3 years of service charges that we'd have to come out of pocket on the used vehicle.

Tax time is the worst time to buy a used car. A new Nissan Versa with automatic transmission runs $ 12000.00. Manual is around $ 10,000.00. Brand new. Manual windows and locks. Good for students

I think my mother in law got a good deal on 2012 Nissan Pathfinder ($4500). It was a buy from owner ,not a dealership.

Check out Scions. Toyota quality but more affordable price and more of a younger-person look.

But that’s the thing, it’s not 50% done at 50k. It’s probably 25% done.
And repairs up to 100k are negligible in my experience
