Why are people so ignorant when it comes to common car maintenance?

Last week, a younger guy at work payed a fortune to have someone come out and change his flat tire. When I found out I told him I'd help him change it, but he responded he'd rather have a 'professional' do it.
This morning another guy at work got his car towed into a shop because the battery was dead and took the day off so he could go get it 'fixed'.

Meh... I pay people to do that shite for me so I don't have to frick with it.
Can I change my tire, my battery, my oil myself? Yeah I can. I rather pay someone to deal with it.

Plenty of boomers don't have a clue how to change a tire either.
I can do all sorts of maintenance on my vehicles. I choose to pay some one to do most of it though, because I have better things to do with my time.

My dad doesn’t know anything about cars, but even he showed me how to change a tire and change a battery or jump start a car.
I mean these were just basic problems my parents would run into when I was growing up and I learned basically just by watching.

The only time I pay when I can't do it myself. I've been a shade tree mechanic since my teenage years and that's been a long time ago.

To me it's more about the change in cars period. The days of "tinkering" with a car as my father put it are basically over. Those days when I used to hand over the 5/8ths and grab pop a cold one. There's just no way to tinker any more. So what happens is when dad has a flat or a dead battery, the kids aren't around to see how or who solved it.

What is amazing is half the posters here are in the top 2% of income earners and still change their own tires while their OT8+ significant other makes them a sammich.
