Parents don't teach them and it's easy for them to pay someone to do it although they could save money if they knew how to work on it.

These are the people you want to buy a car from. They let the dealership do everything and usually the cars are taken care of really well.

No way I am sitting on the shoulder of a interstate or other road highway changing a tire with cars and 18 wheelers passing within 3 feet of me, my life is worth more than that. If there is a area to safely pull off the road I will do it myself.

It's not always ignorance, sometimes it's just that they make enough money that they just rather pay someone else to mess with it. I guarantee that my brother would never change a flat unless it happened on the side of the road as he was heading somewhere. Flat in his front yard? Yeah he's calling someone to fix it and taking his other vehicle to work that day. Six figure income will spoil you like that.

I do an opportunity cost analysis when it comes to stuff like that. Tire, myself. Brakes, questionable depending on price. Oil, let others do it.

I, too, judge an entire generation based on two stories from a random guy on the internet. Especially when only one is implied to be a millennial.

Because its cheap and easy for other people to do.
I don't think its necessary to learn how to change your oil anymore.
Changing tires, changing battery, and adding fluid are absolutely mandatory as a skill though IMO.

Well these guys sound dumb as hell. My dad taught me all the basics and some other useful stuff.
Sometimes car issues are beyond my knowledge and it would be better off paying a mechanic to do major work instead of me trying to fix things that I have no knowledge about because it is not my field.

Put a fix-a-flat in it, drive to tire shop.

Could have had a bad alternator, not necessarily an easy swap, depending on car model.

Hmm... no, a repair shop is laughing and taking him to the bank. It would take less time to replace the battery onsite as it is to hook up and tow off. They're getting him twice. Same "use of time". You're next it appears.

Before my dad handed over the keys I had to rotate all 4 tires and change the oil while he watched. I assume this was to show him I could do this stuff properly and safely and to get in my head that I should do whatever maintenance I could to save a buck. Why waste money on stupid stuff like this when it can add up and become a fun toy or airline ticket?
Can't tell you how many times I've had to show other guys how to change a flat or been with a girl when she got a flat and changed it for her. Oddly enough, none of my vehicles have ever gotten a flat.

Same but I started paying people because I can afford to and my time is valuable to me. I used to be the guy friends and family called for a jump or to change a tire. I'll still do that for people.
Just recently, however, I had a blowout and pulled into a parking spot on the LSU campus. I am struggling with a rotator cuff issue and had some trouble because of how I parked positioning the jack and jacking up the truck. Plus it was raining and cold (the afternoon/evening before the snow day). I called roadside assistance for the first time ever.
I gotta admit, I felt like less of a man, but I may do that again if I ever have to.
