Why are gym memberships so difficult to cancel? It’s all a big scam

I signed a contract two years ago in November for a gym. We paid on time from an auto-draft from a credit card. Membership ended in November and I emailed this morning to cancel my membership and any auto rollover BS.
They tell me there is a two week notice for cancelling. Like wtf? It’s a not a job, just cancel it. They said if in two weeks your balance is zero we will cancel it, but you will have to pay for December. I laughed and said I canceled the credit card and I’m out of the length of the contract, good luck to you. What a scam!

I paid more for my home gym than it would cost me to join somewhere but it's always open and I don't have to deal with this kind of nonsense.

I’m genuinely surprised that “activation/cancellation parity” laws haven’t managed more traction. If you can agree via a particular method (phone, text, internet, whatever), you should be able to cancel by the same method.

…or asshats who can’t re-rack weights or wipe down the benches after use.

I get it. It sucks, but I'm sure it was disclosed in the contract that you signed.

pretty common, canceled one and the goober said something similar regarding two weeks or some bs. maybe it has to do with billing cycle

I moved out of state and my gym wouldn’t let me cancel online/remotely; the only option was to come in person…even though I explained that I’m now several states away.

Gyms make money off the people who forget to cancel.
They are hoping you won’t remember in two weeks.
All about trying to get every dollar.

Not so fast. He may still have to deal with that.

I like the gym. I’ve done the math and no way financially to get even close with a home gym. Plus, I like the energy of other people around me lifting and working out.
I’ve moved several times over the last decade and never had a problem canceling. Yes, some have quirky time rules but that’s in the contract and never caused a problem.

I had something similar and had to cancel card for it.
I called to cancel and they mentioned an option to freeze account. Wasn’t sure what that was and asked. After explanation, I told him I want to cancel immediately.
He said it’s 30 days to cancel but can freeze account immediately. So I said to freeze account and here is my 30 days notice to cancel.
90 days later I get a charge. Apparently they only froze it and 90 days it reactivated. I saw a charge a few days later and called about it. They claimed they didn’t have a cancel in the system, and the charge will stand. AND since 30 days are needed to cancel and next billing cycle was 28 days away, I have to pay for the next month too.

Screw anytime fitness
They changed my home gym to Alexandria/Pineville while I was working there. I got a new job at home and they wouldn’t cancel it. I sent multiple emails letters texts and they wouldn’t cancel it.
The manager there wouldn’t cancel it. She blamed it on corporate and corporate blamed it on her. They ended up sending it to collections and I ended up paying it because I didn’t want to screw up my credit,

Someone can call my cell phone from Now Dot, India and cloak the call to say they are calling from my area code and prefix. There were 12.1 Billion robo-calls made in June of 2018 alone. And apparently we cant stop those either even though its "illegal" under federal law.

Stop putting everything on auto-draft. When the contract is over, stop paying. I guarantee they will cancel your contact.

Enjoy the collections notice in 120 days.

You should read a contract before you sign it. I guarantee your gym had you sign paperwork where you agreed to those cancellation terms when you joined. Just because you don’t like the process doesn’t make it a “scam” - you’re just not smart enough to think things through.

Well the truth is places like Planet Fitness build their entire business model on people signing up and then not using the facility. If they actually did you wouldnt be able to get a work out in on account of the volume. Thats why some of the dodgier places make it so hard to cancel.
