This is likely your answer. I would bet a life's earnings that if you held a picture of him up along with any pic of the historical figures listed, MJ would be far and away more known than any others listed.

most famous person in world
Seeing that of the 7 billion people there are over 2.6 billion people in China and India I would have to go with someone like Ghandi or Mao Zedong. If you had to survey every living soul. I doubt many of them in the countrysides of Asia ever heard of Lincoln or MLK.

Has to be Gandhi, Adolf Hitler or William Shakespeare.

Genghis Khan
Alexander the Great
Napoleon Bonaparte
Joseph Stalin
Charlemagne
Leonardo
Gandhi
Einstein
Newton
Galileo
All well-known among even moderately educated people, but not necessarily among the poorly educated.
Imagine the most uneducated communities you can (the hood, the sticks, etc), and consider whether anyone would know who Charlemagne is.
Would guess Einstein would be the tops among that, even if the name is only an expression amongst some.
"Caesar" would be higher, but there's a couple of issues- a lot of recognition comes from the Bible, so is that "religious"?
And are we clear on the difference between Julius, Augustus, and for that matter, all the others?
Christopher Columbus would also be very high on the list.

I don't think anyone can say that Caesar is a religious term (unless you an ancient Roman dedicated to one of their cults).
I see what you're saying about how the name Caesar spread because of all the emperors (and especially Augustus) who were called Caesar and not just because of Julius. Although I bet if you asked a random person where the name comes from the vast majority would say Julius Caesar even if that isn't necessarily true

These are hard to beat.....
I might add for consideration:
Julius Caesar
Henry VIII
Leonardo Di Vinci
Christopher Columbus
Marco Polo
George Washington
John F Kennedy
FDR
Winston Churchill
You have to consider worldwide knowledge of the persons existence.......for example, not many around the world knew who Lincoln was at that time.
On that note, fame = informational technology, so Michael Jackson et al are actually more famous than the historical figures.

That was actually true at one time. And if you're going by purely # of people who recognize a face/person, Elvis, MJ, Shaq have all been up there.
Obama, Putin, and Queen Elizabeth(and her babies and shite) are up there as well from politics.
