I’m in my upper 30s.

I’m saying this group of 20 year olds coming up are the laziest fricks in America.

I love video games and when my Xbox broke chose not to get another one. It's way to addictive.

They were saying this when I entered the workforce in 1985. It’s bullshite. Of course you will get social security. They will eventually have to raise the retirement age, but you’ll get it. Of course, Trump won’t let it happen.

video games but get pretty bored after an hour

Gave away 120 vidio games and the system a few year back and never replaced them. Kinda miss it sometimes. I STILL HAVE MY NINTENDO WITH DONKEY KONG AND ZELDA.

I don't have anything against gamers but I just don't get it.

I hate video games.

Video games are one of the cheapest hobbies around so that is a plus for them.

And it’s cheap dopamine that is terrible for you.

I guess I didn’t want to get in that, if you play video games you are a loser and have no social life.

I haven't played a video game in over a decade, so I'm not defending myself here. I kinda think video games are a lame way to spend your time, but this is not true.

Some people play games the same way someone would watch sports with a friend. It's when it takes over your life that it becomes an issue.

There's nothing wrong with video games as an act of leisure. Not for me, I don't see the appeal, but I'm sure a lot of people don't see the appeal of wathing football.

Left the workforce at 50 due to taxation.

Working overseas and paying US taxes simply became untenable.

Do you seriously believe that young people are consciously choosing gaming over having a fulfilling relationship with a loving wife and raising children?

Much like in the threads about masterbation and porn, I argue that gaming is something used to fill a void where those things aren’t present. It’s not choosing gaming over a spouse. It’s using gaming because they can’t seem to find a spouse. Is there a self-fulfilling prophecy there, where their actions make them even less likely to find that relationship? Probably, but it’s not because they don’t want companionship. They don’t have the ability, or at least don’t see themselves as capable of having the relationship they want, so they lose themselves in escapism. Gaming for 7 hours a day is an emotional crutch, just like serial sports gambling, binge watching tv, or any other hobby when take to extremes. It’s a means of escaping a life that someone doesn’t want to be living but sees no path out of to a life they might enjoy living. Thus, they escape, instead.

When I was in a happy committed relationship that eventually led to a marriage, I rarely played video games, and pretty much only did so when she wasn’t around or was really busy. Heck, I don’t think I bought a single game between 2010 and 2018. When she was around, I wanted to be present in my life and had nothing to run from.

After I got divorced, I played a lot more games because, frankly, I had nothing else better to do. I didn’t want to be alive, I didn’t want to be present in a life where I was lonely, broke, and emotionally broken. So, I turned to games and tv shows for a while until I could face the real world again.

for sure. shooting the shite with out of state friends while playing COD or Madden is great. i don't think men are wired to call and "catch up" on any sort of regular basis like women are. there has to some sort of activity.

For men, conversation is a means to an end. For women, conversation is the end in and of itself.

I'd agree with this.

When I have things to do outside that are fulfilling, my phone is nowhere to be found. When I have chores to do, my phone is nowhere to be found. When there's infrastructure for a bike ride or walk with my wife, I don't give a frick about my phone or what's happening online.

When those things are absent, however, and I'm sitting at home, devoid of any real task, I hop to whatever is going to help me escape my boredom the quickest. This website is an example of that.

A fulfilling life is a cure for most of modern depression. Some depression is steadfast, though.

i've read some articles and reddit posts about a significant number of husbands/fathers basically ignoring their families because of video game addiction. guys bringing game systems into the delivery room. that's pretty wild to me. video games are for 8pm on a Tuesday night. I can't imagine passing on real life stuff for Call of Duty.

I agree. The majority, well they are barely employable.

Which is why I say that when times are tough, they will vote in communism and drag everyone down to their level rather than 'rising to the challenge'

I guess you're not paying attention to the trillions (<--- that word has a T and an S btw) we're spending, the record inflation we are having, and the unprecedented peace between the shiites and sunni and the oil deal brokered by China. Oil is now going to stop being traded in USD. We lost the Saudis, my friend. Our chief export is victimhood, and entitled brats that want everything given to them for minimal effort.
