You know there are different sizes right? Your 4500sqft home is quite a bit bigger than his 2800sqft home.

I'm considering a whole house generator for a 2800 sq. ft. living area house.
Let me see what I spent on my servants quarters last year.

Did that include any subsidies in the bottom line?

How much would you save monthly?

How much is fuel for the generator? Maintenance?

I really lightly looked at Tesla pricing despite not being available here and want to say after federal subsidies it was like $32k for a roof addition with power wall storage for 6 days.

I would bet the break even for many people would be relatively modest horizon, and the more reliable system would be the winner. I truly don’t know the more reliable answer though.

Edit: Heck, just went back and for 108% of my average power usage covered by solar with a single power wall for 3 day battery backup on the system after incentives is estimated at $25k

My 5-6 year old Generac 20KW air cooled ran continuously 36 hours short of a week without cool downs, oil changes, manual shutdowns, etc. I have no key for the enclosure to do any of that. I do have it maintained 2x per year. A tech finally came yesterday and performed the maintenance and said everything looked good when he inspected it, I’ve learned a lot over the past week and will have a key and several DIY maintenance kits in storage for the next storm.

My philosophy for the whole home generator has always been if we need it, then we are just going to leave (live in New Orleans). However Zeta and Ida alone meant 13 days without in a year.

Not sure we’ll pull the trigger but will definitely be looking hard at generator options during the hurricane offseason.

Whole house gensets are great if they are installed and sized properly. First, you need the oversized home ng meter, then you need a volume tank/header between the meter and engine. When that 5ton ac kicks on that batch is hungry and wants no. Here's our problem, with soo many leaks atmos energy is cutting back pipeline press at night.

Get a liquid cooled. Many people are having issues with air cooled as they are not designed to run your home for a week at a time non stop

My FIL is one of them. Brand new generator put in earlier this year and went out 6 hours in to losing power. My folks installed after Katrina and it is still running strong after 6 straight days of use. To me it seems like they have started building them cheaper, but who knows.

How much oil have you added? I was shocked at home much oil my generac burned with continuous duty. In my experience water cooled generators hardly ever need oil added - just regular changes at 250 hours.

Don't buy generac. I have had a briggs and statton 20k(propane) since 2009. Auto transfer switch. Has secondary contact connection for a second A/C unit which keeps 1 central unit from starting until the other one shuts down. I dont use electric oven, washer or dryer on generator. We have gas stove and electric water heater.
Do the maintenance, especially the stuff that is not in the manual. Gen. salesman should know what I'm taliking about.

I’ve got a 24KW Generac and it was right at 10K installed. I have a 3800 square foot house with 3 AC units and a heater chiller on my pool. I also have a Kegerator, 3 mini fridges, 2 deep freezers and a Fridge.

Ran 3 AC units and had no problems tripping and it ran for 4 days straight.

Buy a $1,500 generator and pay an electrician $500-$600 to put a transfer switch on your box.

Is that gonna run the whole house though? I don't want to miss a damn beat. I wanna be able to blow dry my hair all over the house with every tv turned on and AC on 65.

The Cummins 36 kW would be Way oversized. I’m not sure what size is right for you.

Is your heat gas or a heat pump? If a heat pump what size heat strips?

Is your oven electric? Stove top? Clothes dryer?

Answer these questions and I’ll tell you what size generator you will need. It will be between a 15 kW and a 24 kW most likely. You can go over that but only if you are all electric.

Our house is about 2600 sq feet. We had a generac standby whole house installed in 2016 by Valentine Mechanical. We have a service plan where they come out every six months to change the oil, filter, spark plugs, check for any leaks, etc. They test everything. We just got power back literally 20 minutes ago. Our generator ran the entire house for an entire week with no issues. This includes two central AC units. All I had to do is change the oil once and check the oil level daily. People who say their Generacs are crapping out must not be
maintaining them correctly. We paid about 11k plus about $350/yr for the maintenance plan. It’s a 20kw.

ETA it’s an air cooled, natural gas unit.
