Going with the gut works for me. You develop instincts as a survival mechanism.
I turned this same job offer down for another town and that was very hard. A few months later it opened here. Someone transferred to take the job i turned down and i got their spot.

Life shouldn't be mostly about working all the damn time. The focus should be on family, friends, building relationships, having fun.
You want your current quality of life? That takes work.
We live in comfort in our homes because of the technology and maintenance of Air Conditioning. That takes work.
We no longer fear most diseases because of modern medicine. That takes work.
We can travel long distances in mere hours that use to take weeks because of cars, trains, boats, and airplanes. That takes work.
You might be noticing a trend here...
I'm willing to bet our hunter and gatherer forefathers didn't work quite as hard as we did, but they shite in bushes, and died in their late 20's/early 30's toothless to gun disease. Or maybe they fell out of a tree, broke a leg, and then died from an infection.
Mother Nature sucks, it takes a lot of work to overcome her bullshite. The more you work, the better your life gets. You don't want to work 40 hours? Go for it, but start cutting out some comforts.

Unions. Before that, people really got fricked by their employer.

This traditional M-F work week is so antiquated that it irritates the ever-living hell out of me. There is no good reason why we shouldn't be working 10-hour, 4-day workweeks and enjoying Friday-Sunday off.

Start your own business.
You'll work 24/7 and the 40 hour work week will feel like a breeze.

People who keep working live longer. This was the key finding of a Japanese physician who studied longevity and lived to the age of 105.
People need to feel like they have a job to do.

When you're old and broken down, will you still be glad you worked all those hours instead of doing something else that would enrich your life? What's more important, slaving to the grind, or quality time with the family?
