There was always some toy/doll rush back in the 80s and 90s. One I haven’t seen mentioned here yet was Furby. That was late 90s and the last significant one I can recall.

I remember, but I never got their appeal, as they reminded me of Down's Syndrome kids.

FWIW, I was 23 that Christmas season.

That was the only one I personally got caught up in. My girlfriend at the time HAD to have one. I’ll always hate Furbys.

I remember the destruction and the calling out of the National Guard. Korean businesses with sharpshooters on the roofs. Reagan was on TV asking for calm.

Tickle me elmo had a white hot moment too.

Not sure I've seen anything quite like the cabbage patch kids though. People were fighting over them.

Buddy of mine worked at a Service Merchandise type store. If someone was particularly aggressive, he’d make sure they received a Cabbage Patch doll of a different ethnicity, telling them that’s all that was left.

I was in the 7th grade. My sister didn't care for the craziness of the stupid doll.

Does anyone remember when Saturday Night Live had an episode about the Cabbage Patch dolls where someone was dressed as a life size Cabbage Patch and went ape shite over the humans? LOL

I had a transister radio in 1962 to listen to after mom said go to bed.

My daughter had about a hundred of the cabbage kids and years later I checked out the value. Promptly put them in garbage sacks for the dump

Omg , I was there as well. A friend with me was injured but it was because we were heading up the down escalator , when it came to a screeching halt she lunged forward and her little slides with heels got stuck in the groove and she bit the dust. Needed dental and medical attention It was an experience for sure

Small world.

I’m sure I crossed paths with a lot of people on here growing up in New Orleans East.

My 2 little sister's had them. I don't even think the oldest one really wanted it, but to the moms and grandma's of New Orleans it was like a status symbol. You weren't shite if you couldn't get your hands on a Cabbage Patch kid.

My grandma found out when Lionel Playworld was getting their shipment and took me to the back of the store at like 4am. The 18 wheeler was unloading and there were crazy people rushing the truck. Grandma got 2 of them. It was freaking wild.

Okay on the income, but are you going back to the 1950’s, because woman seemed to have more credit cards in the 60’s and 70’s. It was common for women to carry credit cards from every major store and gas station they frequented.

Those were more "store" and gas cards I think.

The credit card faze we know it today really started in 80s and took off in the 90s. Up through the 80s, underwriting for credit cards was pretty rigorous.
