I did no car note for 16yrs. 2000gmc had 307k miles on body but 165k on a different motor, rebuilt transmission 2x.

Started costing more to maintain than it was worth.

Got a new truck and is worth every penny

Bought the 05 camry in 08 cash. Drove it 11 years with no note. Never did anything but regular stuff (brakes, tires, shocks, and a new starter).

Bought a 14 Honda to help a relative out and upgraded in 19 lol

Bought a 2005 F150 for cash in 2007, drove it until 2020, put 110k miles on it, only repair was a new radiator which I swapped out myself. Bought a 2016 Tundra for cash which I intend to drive until I can no longer drive safely, or if I live long enough iinternal combustion engines are banned.

Since 2001 I've driven a Camry that's always been well maintained. The car is in perfect condition, far from a old beater.

On a trip I rented a 2020 Camry for a couple of weeks but that car seemed too complex and too heavy.

This is definitely not true. Many people who can afford the PAYMENTS on new trucks buy new trucks.

But should we care?

Not unless their financial decisions are an eventual drain on other people. Otherwise, people can spend their money however they wish to.

Outside of taxes and a mortgage, car payments are among people's largest expenses. Considering all cars essentially do the same thing for most people (get them to and from work), it's a smart place to cut back and save money for other things.

I love the way older toyotas were designed. No bells, no whistles, no frills, just rock solid engines and dependability. My 04 Tundra did have a few empty "buttons" to remind me of the extra options that were not on it, but whatever.

My daily is a 06 Nissan Frontier. Not a beater, because I take good care of it. The interior is dated. I have an aftermarket touchscreen radio with a backup camera.
