I usually keep it at 80+ when I travel. The past few weeks it ran the whole week (thermostat is not in an ideal place). This time shut the whole unit off for the week. It'll be brutal when I get back into town though.

Whatever savings you made by turning the unit off will be sucked up when your unit runs for 2 days straight to get your house back to 72

You will have mold and peeling paint. Houses need to be climate controlled especially this time of year.

Troof! I normally keep my house at 77 while I am at work and then turn it back down to 72 and it takes about an hour. 2 weeks ago I put it at 80 and then when I got home at 5pm I put it at 72 and after 3 hours it was only down to 76.

Ours at work has been running constantly because it was down over the weekend. They fixed it this morning around 10 and it's been working its arse off ever since to try to catch up.

I imagine it is but today around here is nowhere near as brutal as it was for that 5 day spell in mid-July.

Hopefully, that was the high point of the season.

How often do you change the filter? If you're like most people under 40-45 years old, your whole AC system is clogged up with dust bunnies and pet hair.

The constant change in temperature can be terrible for a house.

This has been debunked numerous times. Yes the unit will run hard to catch up, but not nearly as much as it would have.

Now that mold/humidity issue on the other hand......
