It’s tax evasion. Ask W Snipes.
Cars not registered in the proper municipality is extremely common. If folks are getting arrested for that, rather than ticketed and fined, LE is far overreaching. I'm assuming there were other issues involved.

There’s also insurance denial of coverage issues if you get in a wreck.
It’s a very stupid idea to do this with cars.
You think people with $30mm car collections haven't figured this part out?

A car collection isn’t insured the same way.

Don't drive a '78 Lincoln?

Providing a different address for your insurance than where the car is primarily garaged is considered insurance fraud. They will deny coverage if you get in a wreck and you’re at fault or if you need the UM.
The Texas plate people think they are getting over on the system but they are really fricking themselves. They use a Texas address to get Texas plates (friend, relative, whatever) and then get cheaper Texas insurance relative to Louisiana. Well when they get in a wreck, the Texas insurance company asks: Why is this car registered in Texas with this Texas address being driven by this person who lives and works in BR? Boom. Coverage denied. You just paid for insurance that’s useless.
The insurance companies have investigation units. They didn’t get rich by being stupid.
The people you know (who I assume live and work not in Montana) are running the same risk of denial in coverage with their vehicles they use in Louisiana.

Exactly this.
SF owns Hagerty now.
Pay the premiums, they don't GAF.

Where it gets real fun is last I read the statute your home address just had to be on the registration.
Some states...allow you to put an out of state address on a registration.
Explaining that to a carencro cop was 30 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

It’s technically illegal but only if you get stopped.
It’s not illegal if you own property in MT, but most people just set up an LLC in MT and register it under said LLC, which is illegal in most states.

Doug Demuro pointed out that the Montana thing has been getting cracked down on in other states by Flock cameras. BUt also mentioned that Louisiana is one state that allowed it after a court ruling in favor of the montana llc. But many red states are using FLOCK to see if out of state cars are being used often in other states.

used vehicle prices are retaining "value" more than in the past, mainly because availability and high initial purchase.price but historically what I previously posted is generally the case

Depends how long ago and circumstances. But they do for a fact look at it more closely nowadays to try and deny coverage.
