LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - State officials say something wasn’t quite right when a fisherman turned in his catch during a tournament on Toledo Bend.

The fisherman used lead sinkers to increase the weight of his fish at the Big Bass Splash tournament on May 17, officials said.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said it was contacted by tournament directors on May 17. When agents arrived, they determined Aaron Moreau, 38, of Pollock, had placed 2.59 pounds of lead weights in the fish before turning it in for weigh-in, according to LDWF spokesman Adam Einck.

Einck said Moreau fled the scene but was arrested on a warrant on May 23 when he turned himself into LDWF agents. He was booked into the Sabine Parish Detention Center.

A fishing contest fraud conviction could result in up to a $3,000 fine and one year in jail.

Given where this took place, it's not hard to imagine at all.

When you finance a $90,000 bass boat for 20 years, you have to figure out a way to win $1500 in a tournament to make that payment. The 4 20” depth finders and livescope just wasn’t getting it done

2 and a half pounds is a major difference in a fish. Most guys who fish bass tournaments usually can eye a fish and tell how much it weighs…

Could you imagine weighing a 3 and a half pound fish and it coming up as 6 lbs….

Dude mustn’t have been too smart.

Always wondered if you could just inject bass with like silicone or something like that to add weight.

It’s also very comical that there is a law that can get you arrested for cheating in a fishing tournament.

I get being banned from tournaments but arrested?

It was likely spread out over his 5 fish for the total.

Typically the major tournaments will have metal detectors or x-ray for such shenanigans

Not when there is money involved. Cheating on any sort of contest with cash or prizes will get you arrested if enough value/cash is involved.

Probably so….

I guess that’s why I’ve never attempted to cheat in tournaments….

You’d be amazed how people cheat in tournaments, even these little bs cookie jar weekly tournaments.

The big kingfish tournament winner in Jax has to agree to a lie detector test to get the prizes and cash.

They also use metal detectors and reserve the right to dissect the fish.

You don’t even get to keep the fish any longer. The meat is donated.

They stopped fricking around.

Hell, they need to just start x-raying the catches.

One fish. This was not a 5 fish bag limit tournament. It was the Sealy Big Bass Splash.

What a bunch of idiots. Those weights are freakin huge. People who regularly fish tournaments know about how much a fish should weigh by looking at the size of it

I remember those old school weeknight working man tournaments on False River. Dudes were cheating off their arse to be the local hero. Fish tied up in random places.

I’ll never understand the desire for dudes to impress other dudes.

Negative Zac. Sealys is a one fish deal. Biggest fish per hour and an overall winner. Ole Aaron was trying to make him a few hundred by winning an hourly division.
