Which is it: you can’t judge a book by its cover or what you see is what you get

State your case.

It seems these are two options. You can either make assumptions based on appearance or appearances can be deceiving.

What say you?

What you see is what you get. But, I'm always willing to be wrong. The whole "No second chance to make a first impression", is wrong. I've had my initially poor impression of people change over the years as their work product improved.

It depends on how much depth perception you have with the cover.

For most people, you can’t judge a book by its cover, because they only see skin deep.

However for others of us who have the ability to see with much more depth, what you see is what you get.

Well, modern books have these jackets that tell you a basic plot and some things about it, the author, the genre, etc. so i’d say it’s cover would be a good start as far as judgment goes

In my experience, what you see is what you get. I work in retail and can spot trashy or problem customers a mile a way

It’s both correct: You see the person’s actions.

Therefore don’t judge based on appearance, judge based on what you see the person doing and saying.
