It all depends if your wages will be the same no matter where you live. A lot of places I'd move to are expensive but the jobs in my field pay more.
If your wages will be the same then I'd probably go with Boise, Bloomington IL (super safe for kids), or somewhere in Florida just for the warmth and beaches.

In your situation, I'd suggest Salt Lake City. Sure, it's Mormon central but very family-friendly.

Lots of good suggestions in this thread. And lol at the couple of depressed people that down voted every post.
For the OP I would avoid AZ and Cali if you have kids. Find some nice small to mid size town in the south or the rockies.
For me personally, I would live on the Carolina coast.

The only problem with SLC or the surrounding area is not that it's full of Mormons. Its that all the kids are Mormon. Be prepared to have your kids become outcasts if you move there.

It's possible I could live there someday. We spent 4 days camping and loved it. Great combination of wildlife, mountains, ocean, rivers and lakes, and damn few people and hard to get to. Nearly perfect.
For now I'm going to try an undeveloped area of the Gulf coast. We'll have over 20 acres, our own lake, bordered by wildlife preserve and conservation land on all sides. Plenty of boat ramps and good seafood restaurants within 5 miles. Not many places left like it.

For my career? Right where I am in northern Virginia. There's no other combination of government, military and private sector like it in the country.
There are plenty of other great choices for natural beauty and quality of life after I retire.
