It really depends on how much money I'd be making. If I'm balling probably DC, Boulder, or Portland.

For the OP I would avoid AZ and Cali if you have kids.

If I were single or if it was just the wife and I we'd move to Cali or New York or some place sandy. With kids, gotta think about them now but we want something new. Have lived in Texas for around 15 years now and it's getting pretty bland.

I travel all over for work. Out west, minus the coast, is not diverse enough for me. The major Cali cities are awesome if you can live there. The NE is not bad, but the people suck. Ugly women. I have been enjoying the MS coast lately. Close to the great beaches in AL/FL. Close to NOLA, and you have some great fishing and gambling. Like the other guy said, it has a low cost of living.

ETA:

Arkansas, or any mid west state might as well be Iraq. There is no reason to live there.

Never been but a coworker of mine almost moved there for her husband's work. She was really bummed when it didn't pan out. Showed us tons of pics of the place, looked gorgeous out there.

I've heard of offshore workers with 14 and 14 schedules being allowed to live wherever and the company pays for their travel to get to work when its their 14 on. Being married with a kid, i dont think I could do the 14 and 14 in the first place. If I was single, I would think about experiencing as many different places that I could. A few years on the west coast, a few years in the northeast, a few years in the midwest, just experiencing all the different lifestyles that most will never have a chance to experience. Then I'd probably settle into a place like the Florida Keys.

I've got a soft spot in my heart for South Louisiana, but if I had the chance would move to Charleston, SC OR Savannah, GA.

on my own hill in Cheatham County Tennessee. but that would have to be my retirement home because you're a million miles from anything, except the dam, and the park.
