On my 8th birthday in 88 I got a Nintendo!

Riding bikes to the corner store (a mile or so away) with my pals. Playing war in the woods.

Good times.

1988 seems like the year we woke up with a hangover from the non-stop party that had been the 80s. The movies, music, fashion, TV shows, sports and politics just didn't quite hit home the way they had before. It was still better and fun but you could feel things starting to shift. It was the beginning of the end of the greatest time to be alive.

Around this time of year? Going to summer workouts for football as an upcoming 8th grader. Push Mowing the church grounds for free (dad volunteered me). Push mowing our acre and half lot for $2. Had a job laying sod for $3 an hour. Heading to the creek to catch crawfish that I'd then use as bait to catch bass at the lake across from my house. Swimming in the lake. Playing football, wiffle ball, and basketball with the kids in the neighborhood.

Drank beer with my dad (I sure do miss him).

Our church had a youth fundraiser where they auctioned us off to church members to do chores and then the church member would donate money to the youth. Every summer I'd get "bought" by the same family. Put in a goldfish pond and did alot of landscaping all while fighting off their a-hole dog. Son of a bitch hid in some shrubs (that i had planted the year before) and bit my leg the first day I went in '88. I swear that bastard planned it for a whole year.

I lost a friend at the same age because I told him he wasn't good enough at basketball to play at Kentucky. He legit got pissed at me.

I recorded lots of songs off the radio using a tape deck. I also borrowed lots of tapes and made my own copies.

Thinking The Simpsons was the greatest show of all time and that it should never end.

And I quit watching it about 10 years after that yet it won’t fricking die.

I was 18, in the Navy, and living in Pensacola. Kokomo, Don't Worry, Be Happy, and Red, Red Wine were played in bars and on the radio that Summer to the point that I still hate all three songs.

For most of 1988 I was chilling in Amniotic fluid, was forced out later in the year, and everything has been down hill since.
