It was Between PT and Normal Work Call, trying to get back on Ft Campbell when everything was locked down. Took a while to get back on base. Within 60 days I found myself a young baby faced 22 y/o sitting in Afghanistan. Within 6 months we had the 2nd Major assault with my Unit the Rakkasans fighting along side the 10th Mountain Division for Operation Anaconda. My Platoon was Paired up with some Aussie SAS dudes. Wild times!

Sitting in the waiting room prior to a life care planning conference with a Lafayette orthopedic surgeon. Not a single patient or medical staff member said a word as we were all glued to the TV set in the waiting room. Everything was so surreal.
A girl I went to HS with was 2 yrs younger than me. She met her husband while they were both training for the NYC Marathon. He was employed as a bond trader and investment banker on the 89th floor of WTC Tower 2. He was 32 yrs old and never it home. She was 3 months pregnant with their first child.
facts to ponder:
2,977 people died as the results of 9/11. (343 were FDNY).
Approx, 1,100 people's remains have never been found.
More than 9,000 people have died from illnesses linked to the 9/11 attacks.
Over 57,000 people (4,000 FDNY) have been diagnosed with a form of cancer related to that tragic day.
Exposure to toxic dust, smoke, asbestos, jet fuel, and other hazardous materials has been linked to long-term health effects including non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer, blood cancers, and thyroid cancer being the most common.

9.5 months old, so I only remember what I was told by my parents. We were in Orange Beach on vacation when it happened. My mom said she watched the TV all day sobbing. The anxiety of being a first-time parent and wanting to protect me (she was no Lindsay Clancy

I heard about the plane hitting listening to Condon as I was turning pulling into the Dentist office. Then in a Dentist chair getting numbed up for a root canal. Nurses came running down the hall crying screaming the building fell..

Wife and I were in France, tho Loire Valley. Had gone out on a long bike ride.
Came back to the little hotel we were staying in and the staff led us in to the restaurant where they had a TV.
The next day we went to Normandy.
Looking out over the graves of all those young men from 50 years ago while thinking about all the innocents who just perished on US soil. Humbling.

It was an Immigration Inspector at Dfw (INS) it was my day off. About two hours after the second plane hit, the Port Director called for anyone who could come in to come in. We processed about 20 unscheduled international flights, that were supposed to be going to other major airports.
It was a very spooky day.
One of the airlines that does not have international arrivals at Dfw, brought in an international arriving flight and let all the passengers out without inspection and processing. I spent the next six months doing all the paperwork and investigation on that.
About six months later, I I changed over to Federal Air Marshal. For the next six or eight years, the whole ethos of the FAM service was to make sure that never happened again.
It was a very spooky day.

Sitting in class at the Howe-Russell geoscience complex at LSU. Professor abruptly leaves and comes back to the podium. Asks if anyone has family in NYC and a few people raise their hands. That was a moment I will never forget. Fast forward in Feb 2022, I was off to Basic for the Army on an open contract and was placed 21B, combat engineer. Lost some good people along the way, OIF, OEF deployments, and many to suicide years later.

The CDC runs a program called the World Trade Center Health Program that is open to any first responder that worked at ground zero or civilian survivor of the attack. People in the program get free health screenings and free treatment for the rest of their life because of the toxic exposure. I think at last count there were nearly 150,000 people enrolled.

When the first plane hit, I had just gotten back from the Vet, with my mom, putting one of our dogs down. Drove to school, went to my fraternity house, where everyone was watching it. Had passed one of my fraternity brothers on the way in, he was driving about 100 miles an hour. His dad was in one of the towers that day, for 1 day as a reward from his company, he had a meeting there. He died that day. Crazy day, pretty sure I attended some classes.

Listening to sports talk radio as St. Louis was about to host the PGA Championship at peak Tiger Woods and Jay Randolph Jr. stops what he's doing to say I think we have a situation going on in New York - a plane has flown into the World Trade center.
Then a few minutes later he says we're under attack after the other plane hit the second tower. Then they went to the national news feed and another thing you never thought you see in your lifetime continued to unfold. A sad day for humanity.
