Asleep at my apartment just off campus when I got the call.

There was still no definitive word on it but I was told planes were falling out of the sky and the WTC had been hit at least twice.

Hell of a fricking wake up call.

Sending a fax the exact moment the 2nd plane flew into the 2nd tower. I still have the confirmation page as a macabre souvenir.

I was the lone American working on a team in a town in England. I felt safe because almost everyone appeared to be an indigenous Briton, even in the city center. I was stranded until commercial flights resumed.

Fast forward 25 years and the town is close to 30% non-native born.

I was getting ready for school, I was in 5th grade. My mom would always have the today show on helping me get ready. I will never forget seeing that second plane hit live. Even at 10 years old my stomach dropped I saw the plane come into view on screen and then a giant fire ball. I went to school and my teacher was a wreck she had a family member who worked in the Trade center and didn't know if they were ok ( they ended up being safe). Will never forget that Tuesday.

I was on the west coast team of the army honor guard. Heard chatter about a Cessna hitting the towers on my way to PT and watched the towers come down during breakfast in the chow hall. Then my whole world shifted dramatically.

I was at a DoD contractor's office complex that wasn't on their main campus but was just an office building with other tenants on different floors.

Word starting spreading in the office. I was able to get to "freerepublic.com" for updates as most news sites were dragging/lagging.

With swiftness, security was upgraded with armed security at relevant floors.

Watched TV at the hotel bar that evening. Most Everyone was subdued, angry etc

I had an 8hr drive home at the end of the week. It was a rather somber drive - listening to Hannity who I thought did a good job in the days that followed.

I was at home, in bed before school (6th grade) when it happened. My grandma called my mom to tell her about the plane crashes and we turned on the news. I went to school, but we were locked down the entire day and I don’t remember anything happening except a school-wide assembly.

My dad was in the air when it happened and had to be grounded in Omaha. My mom and a neighborhood dad, whose wife was a flight attendant also grounded there, left that day to go pick them up.

Took me a long fricking time to fall asleep that night, waiting for them to come back. I knew my dad was safe but still had the nagging worry.

In the Navy, on leave, visiting friends and family in Syracuse and Upstate NY. Watched the whole thing on tv from right before the second plane hit.
