Maybe I'm just old and demented, but I would swear that we would chase fireflies at night in the back yard.....

I haven't seen one in many years.......

We’re a lot better at killing those than mosquitoes apparently

They get killed by mosquito sprayers

I’m ok with people I don’t know dying from West Nile Virus if it means we could get lightning bugs back.

There is pretty good evidence that we are currently in the midst of a mass extinction event in regards to insects.

Saw one about a month ago and was so excited I woke my kids up to come see it. By the time we got outside it was gone.

They are very plentiful up in Tennessee.

We have a yard full each evening since the first of June. We're Getting soaked right now. After the rain, they'll light it up again.

Depends on the state. I noticed states like WV and most of Tennessee they are still plentiful but in North Carolina there are very few compared to 8+ years ago.

Remember the trucks that rolled around your neighborhood spraying for mosquitoes? Turns out that spray didn’t discriminate.

We used to have them on our front porch when I was a kid. Plenty of them. That was before the invention of the mosquito truck.

We used to call them lightning bugs,

Fireflies are being decimated due to climate change as their spawning grounds in the ozone layer get depleted.

I saw three or four species last year, and two so far this year. The Common Eastern Firefly is what is out in largest numbers right now.

I haven't sprayed anything other than around my foundation/house in three years now. We have lightning bugs, but still nothing like when we were little.

That spray still doesn't discriminate.
