I've got some miles on me and I can remember getting the hot lather and watching the barber hone his straight razor on the Irish Linen and Leather barber's strop hanging on the barber chair to clean up my neck after a haircut.
I've never had a barber shop shave in my 72 years but have used a straight razor at home to give myself shaves in the past. I did that for about 2 years or so a while back just to say I've done it. It has a steep learning curve if you're not careful.

My old barber used to do 7 different layers of products between replacing hot towels. First and last were shaving cream. One of them was Vicks. Not sure what the other products were.
