re: When joggers and walkers use the road instead of the sidewalk

How “soft” can asphalt be if it can support cars driving on it? Can’t be that much “softer” than concrete.
Plenty softer. And when it comes to not ruining your joints it can make a huge difference.
I don’t have any problem with people exercising on the side of the road, it really doesn’t have much impact on me driving. The road is 99% of the time wide enough that I don’t even need to go around them.

The biggest issue I have is people blocking the sidewalks with their cars making the sidewalk unusable. That means I have to run in the road a lot of the time.

Joggers and cyclists during peak traffic hours might be the worst people on Earth. 5 AM, these roads where super empty...I know cause that's when I go out.

What's worse, OT? Bicyclists that dont't stop at stop signs or road walkers? I say hit them all.

Here's a link to an article that uses actual data and not anecdotes because I'm tired of arguing how soft asphalt is. Case closed!
Concrete or Asphalt?
quote:
So I might as well let you know up front that the hardness difference between concrete and asphalt is insignificant when running in shoes, because the cushioning afforded by shoes far exceeds any cushioning provided by those surfaces. When moving to grass or dirt, the contribution of those surfaces to reducing ground impact begins to play a much larger role. It's also clear that runners have many personal experiences running on varied surfaces, and in researching this article, it became clear that some runners are convinced they can sense the impact difference between concrete and asphalt.
At the end of the day it's up to you, but science supports that the most likely running injury you'll get from running on the road is getting hit by a car, and that concrete sidewalks are probably safest, provided you watch out for possible uneven surfaces.
Said this exact thing yesterday because it's pretty fricking stupid to think your foot is compressing an asphalt road when you jog:
quote:
With a typical runner of 70kg landing with about 3-5x body weight of force, neither concrete nor asphalt compress any measurable amount.

I’ve been told that asphalt is “softer” than concrete so it’s easier on the joints. Well if there’s trucks driving on asphalt all day it isn’t that damn soft is it?
If that’s the case, why not make sidewalks out of something else?
When I was a kid, I biked on the sidewalk and never heard shite about it. Every kid in the neighborhood did.

On our Saturday runs that go through more well traveled streets, our group always run on the road until there is traffic. We then move over to the sidewalk temporarily to let the traffic pass. I've been running with the same group in Birmingham for 3 yrs now and never had a problem.

Should be ticketed.

Everyone complaining about people running in the road and not on sidewalks need to voice their concerns to their local politicians and law enforcement officers. I'm sure they'd love to do something about this public nuisance.
This is the result of complaints.

Then this...dedicated and protected bike lanes.

Asphalt is NO softer than concrete. I watched a woman trying to cross Airline on foot at the intersection of Old Hammond. She was struck by a Corolla and went airborne, landed on her head and literally opened her skull and brain tissue fell out on Airline. Joggers and walkers should run on the grass, it is better on the knees and ankles.

Until you roll your ankle in a hole.

The things is, people who would actually hit an innocent pedestrian because they have anger issues don't talk about it beforehand on a message board. They just do it.
It's the same reason I don't worry about the trucks who like to get within a foot of me on my bike. All bark, no bite. I'm more worried about the idiot on their phone than the road rager who feels protected in their car.

Yeah we don’t let that shite fly in my neighborhood. It’s especially important for us bc there is a blind lady that walks by herself a lot and if she has to constantly go around cars blocking the sidewalk she can get disoriented.

bullshite. Majority of sidewalks in subdivisions are required to be put in by homeowner/builder when house is initially built with little to no over site. Once built, they are responsibility of homeowner, not a bgovernmet body so 99% are not cared for at all
Apparently you live in a shithole as my town actually inspects the sidewalks and requires the homeowners to maintain them. Any tripping hazards are noted and the homeowner is given a few months to repair them. If not repaired the city has a contractor fix it and the homeowner gets billed.
To add, busted arse sidewalks are hell to shovel when it snows so people generally maintain them.

This....a city can put bike paths for days and cyclists will still gravitate to clogging up 2 lane roads people use to get around. Don't give a frick that traffic is slowed down to 10 mph 6 cars deep behind them

I run 20 miles a week. I run on asphalt because sidewalks are uneven and hard. Asphalt is better for the joints. I run near the shoulder and against traffic so I can see people like you coming and get in the grass as needed.

The one that really grinds my gears is the guy in the motorized wheelchair that refuses to use the sidewalks. Has a slow moving vehicle triangle on the back of it and rolls down the road at 5mph. Can't believe someone hasn't peeled him yet.
And yes, the walks are all "wheelchair accessible" or whatever they call it. No curbs in his way.
