When Ford went racing. The story of the 1966 Le Mans.

It all started with a business deal gone bad. In 1963, Henry Ford II, "the Deuce," decided he wanted Ford Motor Company to go racing. The only problem: Ford didn't have a sports car in its portfolio. The quickest way to acquire a sports car, the Deuce thought, was to buy Ferrari, then a race car company that only sold street-legal machines to fund its track exploits.
Ford sent an envoy to Modena, Italy, to hash out a deal with Enzo Ferrari. The Americans offered $10 million, but as the negotiations neared their conclusion, Ferrari balked at a clause in the contract that said Ford would control the budget (and thus, the decisions) for his race team. Ferrari, known otherwise as “Il Commendatore,” couldn’t stomach the surrender of autonomy, so he bailed, sending Henry Ford II a message the Deuce didn’t often hear: There was something his money couldn’t buy.

Over the span of a few years, Ford had unveiled the Mustang, won at Le Mans, and vanquished its fuddy-duddy image.

It would be cool if they could make this into a movie

Looking forward to the movie. I think Matt Damon gets punched in it.

This alone will get me into a theater.

If they ever do make a movie out if this story, Christian Bale needs to have a role to play.

There's a really good documentary about this called the "24 Hour War", which dives into the whole Ford-Ferrari rivalry. I think Adam Carolla produced it.

I found out yesterday that Ford owned Aston Martin and Land Rover up until 2007. I love Ford but to think they owned the legendary and timeless Aston Martin blew my damned mind.

The 24 Hour War is a great documentary on it.
Ford needs his arse whipped for torpedoing his own driver though.

I absolutely love that ford did this. Ferrari said no to ford buying them, so ford decided to beat them at their own game. Love it!

They also owned part of Volvo and Mazda at one point.

Not only did they beat them at their own game, they rubbed Ferrari's nose in shite. Finished 1-2-3, and beat Ferrari's vaunted V12, with a modified Galaxy 500 V8, which only modification was Westlake cylinder heads.

Another factor in Ford's image makeover (in Europe, certainly) was backing the Cosworth F1 engine.

The 427's did not use Weslake heads.
