Did this really happen?

Yes

I believe Edwin Edwards was protecting the state funding garnered from "Sin taxes" made off of 18-20 year olds drinking on Bourbon Street etc. I am sure I paid the light bill at the Capitol Building at some point during that time frame.

However, IIRC, the law was shortly enforced as:

You could buy at 18, but not drink until you turned 21

I remember going to the Silver Moon in Central pretty regularly at 16. Nobody really gave a shite about underaged drinking in Louisiana back then.

I went to the Gator bar and Graces in St Amant at 17.

But Tigerland bars were very much harassed by ABC in 90-93.
They'd line up the entire bar to exit like they entered. Showing ID. Under 18 or no ID(smarter than showing a fake) were given tickets.

I remember going to the Bengal in HS too. Drinking with Lincoln. It was really Benjamin Wynne's death that caused the crack down.

I was a mainstay at the Bengal. Was roommates with Hawk and Dalton. House was party central.

Louisiana's drinking age was raised to 21 from 18 in 1986 to avoid losing federal highway dollars, but a loophole made it legal for bars and others to sell alcohol to those under 21, complicating possible enforcement of the law.

I started LSU in 1996 but we spent many nights in the Bengal when I was in about the 11th grade. I have a teenaged daughter now and pray she's not the moron that I was. Different times I guess.

Was up the road in Biloxi for USAF tech school in '95 and used to drive to New Orleans or just over the state line to Slidell to drink legally. Great times (and some real shithole motels in Slidell). It was just before I left in September of that year that the law changed. I remember kids on base all suddenly came to hate MAAD for forcing the feds to threaten LA with highway funds

Anyone age 42-44 knows the exact year. Everyone else is just guessing.

It was 86, but anyone 18 by then was grandfathered. So effectively it was 89.

I beat the deadline by a few months.

How about perv Sal that sat at the front door and friendzoned all the girls. Think he worked at David's Audio and thought he was cool because big bass systems were cool back then.

In South Louisiana you couldn't buy it in stores but you could in a bar until 1996 or so. It was a strange loophole.
