96. I had just turned 18, was able to buy for about three months, and then the law changed to 21. I was disappointed.

Should someone be impeached over this Quid Pro Quo?

I assumed it was pretty obvious. Otherwise no worries. I just turned 42.

There wasn't much enforcement when the age was 18. I don't even think they gave citations. They sure didn't in Bossier

1995. Could drink when I turned 18. 19 couldn’t. Still did, but it made things harder. We didn’t give a shite then, and ATF rarely sent undercover in... or I was just lucky

I feel like this would be a really easy google search.
But isn’t it weird that the Federal Gov’t just made a tobacco law withought much push back? I don’t have any real opinion about the age people should be allowed to smoke cigarettes, but isn’t it weird?

I was illegal again, but just for 11 days.

It was most certainly 1995, and those saying 1996 have shitty memories.
I was born late in ‘74. Was able to go out and drink all night at the bar when I turned 18. In August, I had to have a fricking black X marked on my hand at Texas club that meant I couldn’t buy alcohol after midnight. 4 months later, I was good again. Absolutely, most definitely, 1995.

I think it’s weird. The feds just declared a nationwide smoking age and boom. Done instantly. What should be a state law is federal.

August 15th 1995, I turned 18 on August 6th of 1995. Had 9 days to drink legally.

Correct. I’ve posted this in the past and more detail but I’ll do my best to sum it up.
1986-ish - loophole created. Most places (bars and stores) sold to 18-20’s but a few places held to 21.
1995 - state law closed the loophole. The day it went into effect (see above), at least one lawsuit was filed for age discrimination. The suit took a while to make it to the state supreme which overturned BOTH drinking age laws from 1986 & 1995. This happened in March 1996. Anyone 18-20 could buy and drink legally for like 3 months until...
State AG Dick Ieyoub asked the court to reconsider and they reversed their ruling on July 3, 1996.

Louisiana was the last state in the U.S. to have a legal drinking age of 18. Up until 1987, state law allowed 18-year-olds to buy and consume alcohol, and a state sales loophole allowed them to consume alcohol until 1995.
The Louisiana Supreme Court ruled in 1996 that raising the drinking age to 21 was unconstitutional because it was age discrimination, noting that 18-years-old were legally considered adults. However, the court reversed its decision later that year after Louisiana faced threats of a removal of highway funds and a spike in drunk-driving deaths.

1986, 21 to purchase alcohol
Posted on 1/26/20 at 9:12 am to Bedhog
You could get into a bar at 18 but couldn't purchase alcohol unless you were 21 when it passed. That didn't mean a friend who is 21 could purchase it for you. If the law came in and you were in possession of alcohol under 21, you would get the ticket, not the bar.

Alcohol does that to you.

I’m pretty sure that if you are not old enough to buy then you are probably not old enough to drink. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of different ages for alcohol

1985. Right before my 18th birthday. I was Grandfathered i. Because I was born before Sept 67.
