I bought a robot lawnmower last year and let it run 4 times a week. This thing is awesome and my yard has never looked better.
I cut around the edges with my walk behind weekly and edge/weed eat as needed but its soooo much better than fighting the yard all the time.

Around 85 when I was 16!I worked at a feed and seed store and got a bunch of ammonium nitrate for free because the bags were busted. I put it down in our front yard as it had never been fertilized. It was the lushest fastest growing st aug you have ever seen for the summer. My dad was furious at the mowings going up to every three or four days. No one kept a manicured lawn then, hell no one owned a weed eater.

Builders use low quality fill to level properties and for house pads. Commercial mowing spreads tons of weeds between accounts. Nationwide plant shipments speed up the spread of weeds to new areas.

My version of this is nutsedge. My neighbor’s yard is half fricking sedge grass. I recently weeded and tilled up a raised bed; a week later, it looks like I’m growing a nutsedge lawn in there

I remember having 4 leaf clovers when I was growing up, not all of this torpedo grass and other crap that grows in lawns now.

To OP: I think part of it is the expectation that things like white clover are “weeds”. But, I think part of it is a shift in weather patterns in the summer. Growing up, it seems like we got afternoon showers very frequently. Now, we’ll go weeks without rain and then have a deluge. If you look up the annual rain totals, they don’t look much different, but the latter pattern causes far more stress on turf grass, which then lets weeds more easily invade.

If you're on 1/2 or more, green is grass.
For less, it gets more complicated. I consider myself a basic lawn maintainer. I didn't obsess over anything for a while. Then, I got introduced to nutsedge that couldn't be easily killed with common treatments like Sedge Hammer. I became obsessive about it, grabbing the sprayer after every daily trip to the bus stop when I'd see a little patch that needed to die. My old hood slowly got taken over with sedge, because most of the homeowners just hired Latinos to cut their lawns, and paid no more attention to it.
Then I moved into a new hood, and spurge is everywhere, and always multiplying because of how it spreads. And then another kind of weed I've dug up, thrown Round up at repeatedly, and it keeps growing back, and
spreading, because none of the neighbors think it's a problem.

It’s really not as difficult as you’re making it out to be. Find a fertilizer schedule for your grass type and region, put your sprinkler system on an automated schedule, spray for broadleaf weeds a couple of times a year, and mow at the recommended height for your lawn type.
Do those four things consistently, and your lawn will look better than 90% of your neighbors’ lawns.

I use lliquid fertilizer once a month. Thats all the pros do except its in a container on their truck. I use liquid pre emergent a couple of times during weed growing season. Quit cutting your yard short. I know u do.

My theory, weeds are spreading like crazy because so many have lawn people doing their yards. Thus, every weed from every yard gets spread by the one lawn mower cutting them all.
When I was a kid, we had the basics, clovers, dandelion, etc. But everyone cut their own yards. You didn’t see all these lawn services.
And I might be completely wrong. Just a Festus theory.
