I bailed on Tru-Green a couple of years ago because I felt they came out way too much, almost weekly. My yard has looked nasty since then, so I will probably opt back in. I do wonder if all that pesticide and fertilizer is healthy to be around, though.

No. Your theory isn’t wrong. When we first bought this house earlier this year the lawn had little to no broad leaf weeds in it. I threw my back out shortly after and relied on a lawn service for about a month. A month after that I’m spraying Celsius to keep them at bay.

Pretty much the same here. I may run my mower once every 3 weeks in the winter months just to neaten things up.
Living in N.O. will find the grass still growing, although much slower, in the colder months.

Get natural st Aug and be done with all the cosmetic boutique bullshite. Trim and cut regularly and occasionally maybe a weed n feed or other product to knock down sporadic weeds.

I'm convinced this is why we haven't been able to get our lawn in shape despite all the sod and fertilizers and chemicals we put down. I've been trying to convince husband to buy a mower so we can do it ourselves.

There are a several reasons:
Commercial mowers spreading seeds from weeds across every lawn they touch
Heavy Zero Turns compacting soil
People generally over fertilize, or worse "weed and feed," their lawns. Too much nitrogen initially looks great but leads to grass decline. Weeds fill in where grass is in decline.
Spraying the chemicals not designed for summer heat. Read labels and get the right spray for the job.
Improper watering.

Had a Mexican lawn crew for 10 years. He increasingly more weeds, stickers, & dead spots. Was paying $60 a cut so basically $240 a month. Lawn looked like shite & couldn’t walk in the grass become of the stickers.
Bought a zero turn with 0% APR. Monthly note is lower than what I was paying the crew & after about 3 months the yard looks way better & is usable.
Weed eating is a pain in the arse but overall worth it.

Correct. Don’t cut short. I have 3/4 acre of Bermuda I keep at the level of 1st cut fairway rough. I mow every 4 days with my lawn tractor to keep at that height and also not to have excessive clippings.
I pay a service for fertilizing and weed and fungus control. Grass is always lush and green until dormancy. Most of my 90 home subdivision has the same guy now for weed and fertilizer. Big green beautiful lawns.
