Didn't Long basically get elected because of his open hatred of Standard Oil? Didn't he also make a legal career fighting big oil...? I mean, those are the historic facts I know about Long. Do you have sources for what you're saying...or is it just like, stuff your paw paw used to tell you...?
I feel like Long just fought the Man and everyone hating on him in this thread is middle-aged to old.
For God's sakes, he was the first politician we had to look around and go, "Hey, maybe the state government's job should be to build roads and bridges to connect all this swampland between our important cities. Also, books and colleges are good things, so we should care about those too."
Like other people in this thread have said, he dragged Louisiana kicking and screaming into the 20th century...where it has remained since.
There are several investigations, some ongoing, detailing the Long family's intense corruption involving oil companies. One of the main reasons Louisiana citizens have been screwed out of oil royalties is due to the slimy dealings of Long and his cronies.
Take a breath and use some brain cells: Just because someone says things and others believe it it without critical thought does not mean it is true.
Long might have said he supported the common man. He was one of the greatest enemies of anyone who worked hard, honest, and sought to keep the fruit of their labor.
I use historical evidence and critical thought. I don't rely on self indulgent righteousness or the narrow minded belief that someone is telling me the truth because he's telling me what I want to hear.
He built infrastructure, supported LSU, Charity hospital, and got text books for public schools. All good things.
The rest was disastrous for every generation from then to now.
His shadow looms over every backward and corrupt aspect of this state's governance.
In case you are truly ignorant and think HUey was "Progressive," he epitomized the most hateful of racists and the pettiest of power hungry despots.
He makes Trump look like Jimmy Carter.

You can say what you want about his politics and his ethics but he was the best friend LSU ever had. If only today's leaders would take LSU and higher education that seriously and I am including Republicans and Democrats. T. Harry Williams' book is one of the best biographies I have ever read. Louisiana's politics has a lot of flaws but there is no denying that it is some of the most entertaining around and Huey set the tone for that.

Everything he did was to strengthen his power and line his pockets. He was not a socialist, he was a manipulative opportunist
He was a banana republic dictator. Even his “love” of LSU was calculated to give him the spotlight

Good Lord, no.
I am barely in my 30's and not even from and have never lived in Louisiana, and even I know how much of a disaster Long was for a lot of reasons. He is held out as a paragon of detrimental corruption and populism in universities all over the country.

Correct
He perfected a corrupt system of influence that Louisiana still feels the effects of today

Great good, great bad. Net: not sure.
Eta: he was like most progressive constructs, like unions and welfare, good and necessary to a point but ultimately abused, overbroad and corrupt.

I view him more as a power hungry populist...a kleptocrat in the same vein as Chavez/Maduro or just about any tinpot dictator.
This is the reality of it, in my opinion, though I'll add he was also a bit of an elitist.
In the midst of the great depression, socialism was an attractive solution to many struggling, even starving, people who had busted their butt all their life to see it evaporate into thin air. Thus it attracted populist politicians who saw that as a means to power and probably understood the governmental control is the ultimate power and wealth vehicle in a socialist environment.
In today's Louisiana, he'd probably be a Republican. In Massachusetts, he'd be a Democrat.

Visited Savannah last week and had breakfast twice at Huey's on River St. Named after ole Huey P. of course. Had this fried chicken eggs benedict both times and was absolutely amazing. Washed it down with a bloody mary, which was also very good. Anytime you're in Savannah's historic district I highly recommend it. (Not typically a eggs benedict eater).
Also, used to love going over his bridge as a kid.

Again, I would love to learn more about this. Do you have sources for those accusations? I have never heard about Long screwing families out of oil royalties, either in a classroom or thru my own research. All that I learned was that he fought Standard Oil and made a lot of enemies because of it. Please enlighten me! (not sarcasm)

As has been said it was different era. 75 percent of Louisiana was illiterate, poll taxes kept the majority (black and white) from voting, the Great Depression was at it's peak. He did a lot of good things but used mafia tactics to get them done. Politicians like Roosevelt and Long are why communism never took hold. Without SOME redistribution the masses would eventually have risen up.

In conclusion, Huey Long was a man of contrasts.
