Those that defend him fail to explain just how every other backward southern state of the time achieved the aforementioned paved roads, state universities, bridges and everything else WITHOUT a criminal as governor.
1) Do you know for sure that the governors of other southern states were not criminals?
2) OK maybe I'll grant you that the other governors were as pure as the wind driven snow, then explain why prior to that time Louisiana was woefully behind many other southern states in the building up of the infrastructure and universities....were they just studying the situation to be good stewards of the taxpayer's money....you should read up on the Bourbon Governors of Louisiana..... Long was no better or worse in his corruption

Long set the standard for corruption.

Did a lot of good, but that was far outweighed by the bad. He set up the Good Ole Boy system, siphoned millions from the FED, was essentially the dictator of Louisiana

You have to understand what drove a lot of people into the arms of Long. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 had a lot to do with it where a lot of people's lives were decimated not just along the Mississippi but also along the lower Red River. Hungry desperate people will vote for anyone who will get them food and shelter and that is what Long promised.
On top of that he expanded LSU by changing the school's admission policies. He basically said that if you graduated from an accredited Louisiana high school, that you could go to LSU for at least a semester at a reduced tuition rate subsidized mostly by the state.
People don't realize that he was only governor for 4 years before he became Senator. The real corruption came later with OK Allen and Uncle Earl and to a lesser extent Jimmie Davis

Yeah, but he put in his childhood best friend as Governor when he left for the senate. He was viewed as just a yes man for Huey, who would enact whatever legislation Long wanted. He never relented power until he died

Allen was just a puppet of Long.

And the stomachs were empty because of socialist policies and central government policies on money and actual pricing of goods.
What are you talking about? this was the roaring 20's the time of Coolidge....you don't get much more conservative than the Calvin Coolidge Administration. To see where guys like Long got their traction look at the floods that hit the Lower Mississippi in the 1920's particularly the great flood of 1927.

Oh BS.
He took oil leases away from the state and put them into the Win of Lose corporation that has since made the family hundreds of millions of dollars.
He made state employees put cash into the deduct box to keep their jobs.
He had the state police distributing his own newspaper.
Out and out corruption.

It was used to line his pocket but was minuscule compare to the Win or Lose corporation.

There is no example as extreme as HPL. None. Not even close.

As others have said...communist
Posted on 2/22/18 at 8:20 pm to Geaux Piggins Geaux
He was a fricking socialist whose legacy of corruption is still plaguing the state of Louisiana today.

I prefer Huey Lewis.

Huey was the first Louisiana governor to court the Cajun vote. I asked my grandmother about him. She said, " He was a crook but a good crook. She was Cajun. On my dad's side my grandfather could never keep a job because he talked bad about Huey.

And forced every all state government employees to purchase a subscription. This was after all of the other big LA newspaper owners and editors turned against the Kingfish.
