Answer this, can you legally enter Canada from the U.S. border?

Those saying $5k are blowing me away. Are y’all going to Hawaii or Europe every year or something? Fuuuuuck that. I spend $2,500 at most (usually $1,500-$2,000) on most family vacations. Hell, even a Disney trip for the family costs me $3,100 but that’s so few and far between. If you’re spending $5k on a typical family vacation, you either need to invest in a vasectomy or tone down your extravagant vacations.
The guy who makes a topic asking for advice for every minor issue in his life is somehow a vacation savant. Weird.

Even driving from like Dallas to Austin is going to cost $150+. A cheap arse Airbnb for 2-3 nights is going to be $300 minimum after fees. Meals for 3 days is $225 if done pretty cheap. That's almost $700 not doing any nice meals or a decent bar tab.
about 100 gas
about 500-600 lodging (stayed at the hyatt regency on the river)
100 concert tickets
a couple nice dinners and bar tabs
well over $1,000

Couple grand for a beach vacation. 70% of that is on the condo/house.

If it’s just the wife, kids, and myself it could be from 2,500-3,000. That’s condo, gas, food, and entertainment.
The fricking 1 time we went to Disney though. shite it took forever to pay that down

3 days at the Breakers runs me about $4k for two of us including airfare wine selection and leisure

Vacations are like dining out. You want to eat a steak, you can go to Outback or Ruth’s Chris. Both have steaks, other diners around you, additional menu items to choose, and both cost you money.
You need to decide if the difference in price, quality and experience is worth the extra money.
Picking an amount to spend and using that as the basis it is not the best strategy. Better to find a place you want to go and figure a budget that makes it happen.

Must not be in todays diesel prices. Hell wanted to go pull the camper to see the mouse since we have some credits but was looking at $750 in diesel just to tow from MS to Disney. Looked into Grand Canyon trip but for a family of 5 looking at $3500+ for airfare alone. Looking more like a state park and bay St. Louis beaches kind of summer

In Orange Beach right now at Phoenix West II. These condos cost 525k new 6 years ago. Today they go for 1.5 million and up. Condo fees are $1000 month. Values went up so the rental rates went up with them. Just eating out cost a fortune. Picked up a shrimp poboy from Doc's. $21 for just a poboy with 6 shrimp on it. I'm not poor, but I won't be going back to Doc's again. Don't see how people with multiple kids can do it.
Gulf Coast rentals are ridiculously over priced. I'll eat it on the rental sometimes because I have no choice but unless I find an absolute steal or stay with someone for nothing or nest to nothing, we just eat in the condo.

Vacation budgets are directly tied to income.
Exactly. You and I can go on the same vacation and spend dramatically different amounts. If I fly coach, stay at Motel 6 and eat at McDonald's every meal, I'll spend significantly less than you if you fly first class, stay at the Four Seasons and eat at Michelin starred restaurants every meal.
In my younger, poorer days, my vacations were much more like my first example. Now a days, they're closer to my second example.

We’ve been to recently or going to
Jamaica (Beaches/kid friendly) $9000
Disney cruise $11,000 (balcony room and a lot of excursions)
Colorado skiing $10,000
All of the above first class flights
Destin, Orange Beach $1500-2000 (some nights paid for and others shared cost with family)

Depends on what we’re doing. We tend to rotate vacations, going on a beach trip one year, cruise the next. If it’s a trip to the beach about $3-$4K. If it’s a cruise, depending on which cruise we take it’s around $7-10K.

I haven’t been on a vacation in 6 years. There’s a reason for that but it’s time I take a good one. WWII themed trip to Europe is on the short bucket list.

The best advice to this topic. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else's budget and do vacations based on your income. 5 years ago we went to Savannah and spent under $5K and it was a nice vacation. Charleston another year for about $6000. Disney one year staying on the grounds for $8k. Used points for a portion of the hotel stays.
Today I can't imagine doing a vacation for less than $10K. We work hard and are successful, so when we have the time to go on a vacation we go big and stay longer because we have to work a little bit each day while on vacation.
Don't judge. Budgets are personal.

I’ve wanted to do one of those for a while. My rough sketch plan would be to start in Paris with a rental car drive up to Normandy and follow Payton’s third army. I think it would be relatively affordable and get you off the beaten path, which is always an enjoyable way to travel. Driving vacations in Europe are always a hoot as long as you aren’t spending all of your time in big cities. It gives you an opportunity to stay in B&Bs and see the countryside.
I think it would still cost at least $100/day PLUS any tours, excursions with ticketed entry, food, and lodging. Maybe two people could do it for $5,000 all inclusive assuming $2k for airfare. The rental cars are a big variable now, but I wouldn’t do it without a car.
