It's pretty tacky of the mom to call and demand you come back, IMO. Even if she is a helicopter mom and expects everyone else to be as well, when she asked your nephew where his mom was and he told her you brought him because she is out of town, she should have assumed you didnt know her parenting rules and let it go. Watching one extra kid wouldn't have killed her. People love to feel righteous though. Even if they look uncouth in the process.

Kudos to you for trying to teach your kids some independence and self-reliance. Seems to be a lost art for most.

My sons have autism. The real kind, before it was cool. Independent living skills are my number one priority as a parent. I don't get to live forever, and I don't get to take time for granted. 18 yeats isn't that many, especially when you start from behind the line.

And for entertainment purposes, what were you planning to do instead, before turning around and hanging out at a little boy's birthday party?

Did the OP even go in and sign all the necessary forms for the nephew to even take part in the activity before dropping the kid off? I'm saying no, I wouldn't want to watch some kid that can't even take part in the party either, nor would I want the liability of watching a kid at a location with a high probability of injury as well. Don't take your nephew to parties if you don't want to babysit him there.

I have a 10 year old boy, all his day parties have been drop offs. And he seems to go to one a week.

I never thought about that. Going to friend's kids & niece and nephews birthday parties.. You are right, all the parents go with the kids. When I was young (3, 4-6 yrs old maybe) I think my mom would take me. It seems sexist today, but when I was growing up that was something it seemed like the dads/husbands didn't mess with.

You are correct. I was scoffed at for wanting to drop my 8 year old off and run a few errands.
He is 8. He can bounce around on his own. He can chew food, wipe his arse, say no to leaving w strangers and knows all the words to happy birthday. I was going to be gone an hour.
Note to parents: at his birthday, if you want, you can gtfo. I can handle em.

Hell I wish some of the parents would leave our 4 year old's party. Weird arse parents from the school hanging out and creeping kids out.
This deserves a thread of its own, but one of the dad's told my wife that his wife didn't come because it was a pool party and it was her time of the month, we'd never met this guy before. lol.
