re: What's Up With Kid's Birthday Parties These Days?

Parents like this live in a world where helicopter parenting is the norm. In their defense however, I've seen how kids act nowadays so this may very well be a reaction to the lack of quality parenting. No one wants to watch your crazy fricking kid.

When I was growing up parents were never at the birthday parties other than the host parent. That would have been fricking weird and embarrassing. However, the difference back then was that we knew how to act in the presence of other adults that weren't our parents.

My kid had about 30 kids at his 8th birthday last year

I always stayed with my son (and kept an eye on all the other kids who I already knew).

A trampoline park sounds fun as hell. You could have had fun, even just watching the kids go nuts and the hot moms, plus the bonus bouncing boobies.

Our favorite one was lazertag... when we adults had enough of the kids bugging us and proceeded to slaughter them in a game of lazer tag and laughing our butts off at them. The kids were thrilled to see us acting like them, so it was all in good fun.

Nobody forces me. I'm old fashioned. I raise my kids old fashioned. Independence is a big skill I want them to have. They generally did not go to parties for random class kids for this reason. We're not spending Saturday hanging out with strangers to appease the helicopter hordes. They went to parties for friends, and friends' parents I knew well enough to trust them alone or hang out and help. Same went for the kids we invited to things. If you don't know me well enough to trust me to watch your kid for a few hours during a party, obviously our kids aren't close enough friends to require their presence at a party. I'm not hanging out with random people because they can't cut the apron strings. And I don't get why other parents would expect this. As the host, there is enough to do without having to entertain a bunch of adults as well. I'm hanging on like an curmudgeon and hoping for a return to sanity.

I'm a from a town of less 50k population. Maybe that matters... Went to dozens of birthdays from grade school til high school and my parents never came to one of them. I didn't want them their at that age and I am sure they didn't want to be their. Teammates parents and my parents would take turns givoing rides home after practice and stuff like that... folks just trusted people more I guess.
