What’s the worst thing you’ve ever smelled?

For me it was rotten food in the freezer after Hurricane Gustav in 2008. The power was out for like 2 weeks, and they weren’t letting people back into the parish for like a week after the storm.

The freezer at the house had rotten liquid food oozing out of it. It was awful. Burying all that crap in the yard and cleaning the freezer was horrific.

Katrina fridge. 12 days of no power before removal. Duct taped around the body and taped the seams. Still disgusting.

There's a huge indoor farmer's market in Decatur, GA that sells everything you can think of when it comes to produce (and proteins for that matter).

They sell Durian fruit and we decided to buy one back in the late 00s. When we cut that thing open and got the first whiff, I think 2 of our group of 4 started puking. Just absolutely horrendous.

The 2 worst

A buddy caught a few fish and forgot they were in an ice chest in his boat. It was summertime and no one opened the chest for a couple months.

The other, we used to make cheese bait for a bait shop. Filled 55 drums full of cheese and put them behind the barn for months to rot before scooping it out to fill 25# bags with it.

I'll add one more, I've spent some time working on dozers and loaders on top of the trash piles at various landfills. That's pretty damn bad.

Kill/Byproduct areas of chicken processing plants. It's so pungent that the smell sticks to metal.

I tried some in Singapore. It's not the worst thing that I ever smelt. It does taste better than it smells though.

GI bleed in the emergency room. You can smell it the next hallway over with all the doors shut.

Also, any necrotic tissue whether it’s a foot from diabetes or cancer.

I was coming to post this same answer. I opened the fridge and then threw up on the kitchen floor.
