What's the story with El-Cid apartments?

When I lived in BR to go to LSU for my BA while my wife was in grad school there, I saw El Cid and they just looked like shitty apartments but obviously it's something deeper than that. Backstory time?

I lived there in late 80’s.
They were shitty then. But great location.

My buddy went streaking from the patio at Mello and dove into the pool. Skinned up everything from his nose to his toenails on the bottom of the pool.

I had a transfer student from BR a few years ago with the first name of El Cid.

My only story about that place is that I went there one night to find a co-workers apartment. I never found
his place (pre-cell phone days) but did stumble across a crawfish boil going on about 1:00 am. I ended up hanging out with them an got insanely drunk eating crawfish until daylight. I consider that a pretty good night.
