I see a lot of people on here laugh at being poor. But being poor does serve a purpose. It can really tests you and see what you are made of. Will you make it out of poverty or will you stay at poverty?

I think for me is when we immigrated(legally) here in the late 80s. No money, no English, no knowledge of culture. I remember seeing a mobile trailer for the 1st time and thought it was so cool. Closest thing I got to a toy was a Sears catalog. I would stare at the Transformers section all afternoon. Good times.

Fast forward 30 years later, mom and dad are retired. All but one of my siblings graduated college. And she's the most successful...go figure. A doctor, engineer, 3 business owners. So when people as or say "isn't America great?". I would smile but think "you have no idea". We owe a lot to this country.

From where may I ask?

Hungry as hell I once but all my change together to buy a fast food hamburger and dropped it in the parking lot. I stared at it on the ground and knew I hit rock bottom.

Back in the 70s when I was in my 20s. I got poor enough I had to start working at least four days a week instead of three to make ends meet. Being single at the time and staying in the road had its drawbacks.

About 9 years ago we started a business in oil & gas. We were so broke that my wife rolled all the change we had in the house just to buy groceries.

Something we have never forgotten.

Had around $35 in my checking account. Literally had to empty a piggy bank to eat dinner at CiCi’s with my gf. But it was cool learning that my piggy bank holds about $75 of loose change.

Late 80's local economy crashed, laid off, racking up credit card debt, using gas and K&B cards to buy food, hiding the car because I was a few months behind on payments.

Moved up north to where the economy was booming, got a job and worked my arse out of debt.

ETA: Back in the day, dollar cinemas and dollar Tuesday rentals at mom and pop video stores saved your sanity. Today's version is the public library that lets you check out DVDs.

Back in college, my bank got overdrawn by one penny and I got charged that damn $50 overdraft fee. Kinda miss those dollar menu/micorwaved burrito days.

The most patriotic, American loving person that I know is an Indian that came to the US legally around 2000.

He says that we're all a bunch of spoiled brats, who take how good we have it for granted, and that we better get our heads out of our asses before we completely frick up a good country.

I wish my American arse could love America like him.

Bought Christmas dinner at Circle K when I was 22. Me and the gf split a hot dog and a bag of chips.

Still think of that night often when I'm feeling defeated.

My wife and I moved to another country with everything we owned in three suitcases and $800 in our pockets. We were fortunate to have a place to stay from the start but still had to share rent. That’s where we started from.

Not really counting college poor because I could always get a meal, wash clothes, sleep, etc. at my parents place if things got dire enough.

Early 20’s, both the wife and I were working less than desirable jobs living paycheck to paycheck but we never took a handout from anyone, I’m no OT baller but everything we have now come from hardwork and dedication. Not everyone struggles or even needs to but if you have you definitely appreciate what you have and what it took to get where you’re at.
