re: What’s the point of the lug nuts that get swollen

Are you talking about chrome plastic caps that go on each lugnut?
Those have been around since I had a job in the Sears Auto Center back in 1984.
Another PITA was the GM cars with the fake wire wheel wheel covers. They had cables bolted on them to prevent theft.

Same thing happened on my 2018 F150 after about 10,000 miles. Brought it in for an oil change at the dealership and they couldn't get the socket on them.
I had to fight with the manager to replace them under warranty. He wanted to try and charge me for the extra time it took to remove them. I called the area rep and told them both to go pound sand. It's an OEM installed part under warranty.
It is probably more frequent up north as salt on the roads in winter really makes them swell. The mechanic told me they see this every day of the week. Design fault, cheap parts, Ford engineering screwed the pooch on those.

I've always replaced that trash. I've had good luck with Dorman nuts.

Do you drive a Ford. My truck did that it is a two part lug nut and the soft outer metal widens as it spins over the miles.
Stupidest shite I’ve ever seen.

I thought discount tire was really trying to pull one over on me when they came in and said i needed $150 in new lug nuts and was ready to tell them to kiss my arse but the guy went and got the wrench in my tire changing kit and showed me that they wouldnt fit anymore on probably 60-70% of all of the lugnuts so now I wont be stuck on the road I guess. Yes, another 16 F150.

Of all the structural and mechanical fails to bitch about, you pick the easiest one to fix yourself

Ford had this problem 10-15 years ago on their trucks and SUVs. I believe they even issued a recall. They were using nuts that weren't all one piece (they were two metals pressed together) and it caused the swelling/deformation.
Just go buy you a new set. I would replace all of them on all wheels.
Edit: you can do this yourself. When replacing, torque each nut to 150 foot/pounds with a torque wrench . (I believe all Ford trucks are 150 ft/lbs nowadays). You can get torque wrenches cheap. You don't need a $500 Snap-On for home use.

Project to change brake pads and shocks on grandsons 2006 this past weekend got cancelled due to stuck lug nuts. A 4-way lug nut wrench with cheater bars bent about 20 degrees out of flat without the nut loosining. Time to send it to mechanic shops.
Probably ought to exercise the nuts every 24 months including the spare

Go get yourself some Gorilla lug nuts and be done with it.
That was the first thing I changed when I bought my 2018 F150

For sure. Over the last 25 yrs I’ve owned GMCs, Toyotas, and now a bronco. I’ve never had a problem with “swollen” lug nuts. Never heard of it.

Normal wear and tear this is not.
This is manufacturers putting cheap, disposable trash on new vehicles when near-permanent alternatives exist. Yeah, I’d be irritated too.

19.5 Socket
Here you go, it's not a matter of if but when if you drive a post-2010 model years of the Fusion, Escape, Flex, Focus, F-150, and F-350. Consider yourselves lucky, F-250 owners.
There is a class action lawsuit due to Ford denying warranty claims but we know how those go, the lawyers will get millions and we'll $2.47 if we are lucky.

How am I supposed to fix it when I can’t even get a lug wrench on it to change them

Ford and Jeep both like the two-piece lugnuts where it's a essentially a plastic cap over metal.
Have had issues on 2000 and 2015 Wranglers and 2002 and 2013 F150s
They eventually fail/swell.
Replace with single piece ones.

I bought a set of one piece lugs for my 13 F150. Had them replaced when I had the tires rotated.
It was like $40 for a complete set on Amazon.
