What’s the point of the lug nuts that get swollen

Had a flat on my truck this morning and couldn’t get my 4-way onto the lugs because every single one of them were swollen so bad. I ended up airing it up and taking it to the tire shop just to get the damn thing taken off and replaced.
Why are they making lug nuts that swell up so bad that you can’t even get a lug wrench on em? Why are the manufacturers running em off the line with generally shitty lugs?

Because those lugnuts were cheap Chinese trash.

I'm reluctant to ask, but I'd really like to see a pic of these swollen nuts

Is this an older Ford? That was a problem about 10-15 years ago.

One of many reasons my next truck will not be a ford.

Username fits.
Toyota uses them too, and has had the same issue. Lots of automakers use steel nuts inside a chrome cover, and they all swell up, especially in corrosive environments.
Why? A few grams of weight save, that's why. If you're not an industry insider, I get it, you can't wrap your head around that. I am, you can listen to me or not, your choice.

I've had problems with Ford, GM, and Toyota. Eventually replaced them with new steel luggage nuts that do not have the chrome covering. Wasn't cheap but well worth it.

I’m in a company truck and we use a service and had them change every single lug out because they were all swollen so bad.

Ford's with the aluminum caps is the dumbest shite I've ever seen.

Happened to me before too. I was told condensation gets in continuously freezing and thawing. I asked about buying lugnuts that don't do that and the tire shop didn't have answer for me. Was a few years ago though.

I've never experienced, witnessed, or even heard of this. Learn something everyday

They have them now. At the tire shop they had signage up to replace them. However, they get so swollen that they have to hammer their wrench on the lug nuts.
Just completely ridiculous that they’re making a completely shittier product. What if I have a blowout on the interstate? I’d be fricked.

You have to rub on the nuts to reduce the swelling.

No, others besides Ford did, and still do, use lugnuts with alloy coverings. My F150 has 2-piece lugnuts but are solid steel for both parts. I also do not use an impact gun, even with a torque stick, to install any lugnut but instead use a Precision Instruments twin-beam set to the proper spec. That and a dash of anti-seize makes all the difference if you ever have an unexpected flat.

You talkin bout the blue balls, baw?

Buy some aftermarket "one-piece" lug nuts for your F150. Most tire places will have them in stock. I have chrome wheels and they match fine.
