States and capitals should be common knowledge. It isn't hard.

So that you don't look like an idiot having to google it when it comes up later in life.

Why not just google the plot summary of game of thrones instead of watching the series?

It's because its important that we learn things first hand.

Especially about dragons.

Quit your bitching. I had to learn all that stuff and fricking Pluto. Kids have it easy these days.

Because it's testable. It's a proxy (not a perfect one) for intelligence.

If they taught critical and creative thinking, it would be better for the kids, but that simultaneously takes a lot more than our teachers are capable/willing to give and is much, much harder to test/evaluate.

It is what it is.

They can also look it up in their textbooks in about a minute. It isn't about the technology. It is about the way our brains learn and retain facts. Repetition and memorization is the foundation of learning. I'm sure there are things at your job that you have memorized. The first few times you did them you probably had to refer to a manual or set of instructions, but with time it becomes second nature. This is just the way of teaching younger children about things. It advances to other areas of study later on.

<--- Former Geography Bee nerd that's now in a sales role. I stopped counting the number of times I've warmed up an introduction with general knowledge about the area the client is in, or a place they traveled to recently.

I'm with you. Who needs math, we all have calculators on our phones as well.

Yup, when you google everything instead of learning it, you're just expediting this country going to Helena hand basket.
