Wolfram alpha does better than i ever did.
I memorized some parts of the trig tables until i stumbled onto an explanation for identities.

Everyone needs a good bullshite filter. The problem is that hardly anyone has one, especially when it comes to "facts" that agree with what one already believes.

Recently found that when multiplying a number by 12 on my IPhone it produces the wrong answer, still trying to find out how to fix it. If I were not in the habit of estimating the answer in my head I would have accepted the answer as correct, ordered the wrong quantity of material and wasted a lot of money.

That’s pretty much all Social Studies teachers teach. Creative thinking, making connections, evaluating and analyzing situations are all expectedly students to know. No one is tested on trivia anymore.
The elementary schools are letting the kids down on map skills and geography though. I’m a middle school teacher and most of my kids couldn’t find Asia on a map.

Mine doing the same thing right now. I feel like I'm back in elementary school with them doing all this homework. They are taught some pointless shite, but you can't tell a teacher anything about the world outside of the doors of the school building

Years ago, I had a grown arse, native-born American adult try to tell me that Virginia wasn't the name of a state. He contended West Virginia was a state, but "just Virginia" is not the name of a state.
I replied that I had friends in Fairfax and Arlington who would be very surprised to learn this info, and let it go.
This was pre-Google. I am guessing that in a few years, kids will be able to ask just about anything on the web in natural English, and get reasonable answers (play around with Wolfram Alpha). That's not a substitute for having an intellect. We can't walk around stupid.
