Agreed. The outskirts of Los Angeles are really nice, though. The city itself is vastly overrated.

It is one big traffic jam. You will waste your life away in traffic or just accept the fact that you are on house arrest from 7am-6pm every day. To many hippies and weirdos who think they are special because they are weird. Very very expensive to live there. 11 months of the year weather it is hot as a desert. If you don’t have allergies you will develop them in 2 years after living in Austin, guaranteed. Food is average at best. Sixth street is trashy/nasty. Homeless people at every redlight and they will pester you at grocery store parking lots. Zero professional sports teams for a large city and I do not care at all about their university sport teams who play there.

LA has the best ethnic cuisine in the country. The only thing really lacking is italian. But LA has the best mexican, sushi, and chinese (us and San Fran.). We also excel in korean, thai, middle eastern, etc. Some may argue that NYC has better ethnic cuisine, and i'd agree that NYC offerings are more diverse (e.g. lots of eastern european restaurants); but in terms of the most popular foods, with the exception of italian, LA is king.
The other thing missing from LA cuisine is 3 star michelin dining. While Michelin doesn't rate LA restaurants anymore, back when they did, we had a handful of 2 stars, but nothing 3 stars. LA's fine dining scene doesnt stack up to NYC, chicago or SF.

This is dumb. There isn't another city even close to being like New Orleans in the country. So many people just go to the French Quarter which can obviously get old if you think that's all there is. I love taking visitors to uptown and down through the garden district along magazine and to Audubon and City Park and then up to Lake Pontchartrain. So many people don't realize how cool and authentic New Orleans can be outside of the French Quarter. Even taking them one neighborhood over to the Marigny to experience something a little bit more groovy. Yeah it's got a lot of issues but if you don't have a blast in New Orleans you're either not fun or you're not tapping into its full potential.
ETA: Not to mention it's nice neighborhoods are absolutely gorgeous and you can turn down almost any street uptown or in the garden district and see beautiful and unique historic homes in abundance. It's also incredibly affordable.

New Orleans is an amazing city to visit, and probably the most unique in the country.
Wouldn't want to live there, but that doesn't take away from how awesome it is.

Right after I got to Edwards AFB where I was stationed, I drove to LA, parked and walked down Hollywood Boulevard. I couldn't believe how crappy it was. It was a real letdown.

Yeah, it really is a wild change of pace from most places. It's simultaneously a city that goes incredibly hard yet kicks back and takes it easy at the same time. I have lots of friends who come to visit and say "oh man I could totally live here" and I don't think most of them would fit in long term. You really have to full embrace the culture and people and the way they do things. It's definitely a slower pace in the working and governing world here and a lot of people can't handle that long term.

it's a cool town, but it's very overrated considering the traffic for its size, cost of living, and condescending douche bags that seem to be everywhere. cut the population in half, leave everything else as is and it'd be a great place.
i live on the "outskirts" (i use that term loosely, i'm 45 minutes from downtown) and i will take a toll each and every time to avoid the shithole that is known as i35 between 45 and 290 west.
ETA: i love NOLA, NYC, and Atlanta. great places.

Going for the downvote record by posting something here for everyone to hate.
Philadelphia: some cool history, yes, but not as much as you'd think, and >90% shithole.
Boca Raton: giant retirement village whose residents think they are the king Prussia. Endless strip malls and houses that cost $1 million+, but would be $300-$400k in similar suburbs elsewhere.
San Antonio: cool fort.
Baltimore: most people probably think of Baltimore as a shithole, but you haven't been there, it's worse than you think. Even their hipstery downtown area is endless human refuse.
DC/NoVA: unbelievably expensive, filled with uptight, pretentious leftists who live on the government teet in various ways. All of them.

Fancy restaurants with over priced food don't excite me though. I want to go the the food truck and get incredible tacos or the hole in the wall sushi spot and get my mind blown by a simple spicy tuna roll for $3 or even some random spot that has burgers that shite all over In and Out's. That's what I'm looking for. Not a place where I have to pay three times more to experience the chef's artistic creativity.

agreed, which is why i'd say New York has a more diverse ethnic food scene, but LA excels in the core foods, i.e. the most popular ones.
a google search of "most popular ethnic food" reveals the top 3 in a landslide, and in order, are chinese, mexican and italian. Much farther behind are Sushi and greek, tied for 4th.
So, LA has the best of the 2 most popular ethnic foods, and 3 of the top 5.

Agreed, which is why i'm making a distinction between everyday ethnic eats (which i argue LA is best at) and a 5 star culinary experience (where LA is behind many other cities).
