Howard Johnson sniper in ‘73 when I was 6 yrs. old. My dad was a cop so my mom was following closely on the news all day.
CSB: Did some charter fishing trips with Capt. Hook. He was a fireman who lost his hand to the sniper. Great charter captain who obviously kept a sense of humor about the situation. That hook came in handy when he’d take catfish off the line, and he could still tie a hell of a knot with that thing.

Honolulu city bus loses brakes s on Pali Highway, flying off a hairpin curve (one killed). They put in an emergency ramp after that. Some hippies got stoned and tried to "test it out" in their VW Van. It tore the Van up.

Challenger explosion, didn't know it blew up or that it was news though. They brought my Kindergarten class to the library to watch it. Only part I remember is some kind of cone being pulled off the top of the tank or shuttle than it launching. I assume they turned it off after that and just told us it was done. Can remember where we were sitting in the floor and everything.

First major event I remember is the Challenger explosion which we were watching live at school in kindergarten in 86. Next would be baby Jessica in 87. To young to really understand either back then but def remember all the emotion the adults were showing for both.

Not a major news story but I recall President Ford giving an address to the nation. Don't recall the subject.
I recall Iran hostages, first space shuttle launch, the Tylenol murders and the arrest of the Atlanta child murderer amongst others.

Dolittle raid on Tokyo. (Yes, the very early part of WWII.
I'll be 84 next month.)

I vaguely remember Rodney King but definitely recall the OJ chase.

Probably Vietnam coverage in early/mid seventies. I think it was "over" but still national news.

Actually...it aired live at 10PM but it was recorded at about 9:30PM! And I remember this news story...
You right. Maybe that's why the whole hood was glued to their TVs. I swear every kid in our neighborhood saw it.
The Word spread fast between 930 and 10pm broadcast.

Daily black and white footage from Vietnam. I didn’t understand, just that it was a war, and Walter Cronkite sure seemed pretty solemn about it.
