Cell phones and a social media presence.

We started the day with the Pledge of Allegiance and if you got paddled at school you got another whooping when you got home.

I will add Mumblety-peg to the list. in elementary school we boys always had our pocket knife and would play at recess.

We could bring guns to school. We didn’t have air conditioning. We had paddles and they weren’t for canoeing.

Prayer and the paddle.
I was in public school (k-12) from 1981-1994 and I don't recall prayer every being involved in the school day. I do recall "moments of silence and personal reflection" as early as elementary school.
As for the paddle.... yeah, I got a few of those over the years, but I recall it no longer being allowed by the time I left jr. high around 1990.

many of us had guns in our vehicles and yet nobody found a need to shoot up people in the school, nor was there ever a fear of something like that taking place

Also we did not have A/C. All we had were bottom windows that you pushed open on the bottom and windows that you had too crank open with a metal pole

Teachers and administrators were not afraid of being sued for doing their job.

In the 80's...
No hot teachers
Bullying was part of life

1. Students are no longer held accountable for their grades.
2. Politicians are now telling teacher what and how to teach. Teachers can no longer create their own curriculum. everything is handed down from the State.
3. The "School Performance Score" or "SPS" is all the school/districts care about.
4. Teachers are only teaching to pass a test (that determines a school's SPS, very little life skills or critical thinking is taught.
5. School is dumbed down to the lowest denominator, in the hopes of keeping Johnny's self esteem high.
6. Teachers are not allowed to fail students. Zeros are not permitted in the gradebook.
7. Administrations no longer back the teachers.
8. Students have figured out they can do nothing and the teacher will pass them with a D, and the school and the parents will all blame the teacher.

Today: lack of parental involvement, students have little respect for teachers, teacher's and administrator's ability to discipline students is usually limited to just sending them home.

Snow days. Going to high school in the north east, we had so many snow days - sometimes 2 or 3 days in a row (blizzard of 1996!). Now, no snow days where I live.

School is much more difficult.
My daughter is doing math in 1st grade that I didn’t start till like 3rd or 4th grade.

Drills where we hid under a desk in the event of someone dropping a nuke on us VS. drills of hiding in a supply closet from an active shooter

My kid knew the same stuff leaving pre-k3 than I did leaving kindergarten.
