I guess I'll get down voted, too, but this is what I was going to say. Maybe you can't be "hot" exactly, but grooming is important. Dress the for the position (work or social) you want, not the one you have.
The number of slovenly people walking around Baton Rouge who look like they haven't showered in a week is astounding. Just daily showering and good grooming will put someone ahead of the game these days.
